What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is when a man struggles to get or keep an erection, usually because of a lack of blood flow to the penis. It can be caused by physical or psychological reasons. It's thought to affect around 50 percent of men aged between 40 and 70 to some degree, but there are medicines and lifestyle choices that may help.

Who can get ED treatment at Boots?

Our confidential Erectile Dysfunction Service is for men aged between 30 and 65, who are registered with a UK doctor and living with erectile dysfunction. It includes careful and sensitive screening, lifestyle advice, plus access to prescription only medicine and regular reviews. Our specially-trained pharmacist will confirm whether the service is suitable for you after a consultation.  They'll carry out a few checks such as measuring your blood pressure, cholesterol levels and weight. You may also be asked to return for a fasting blood glucose test.

Learn more about the medicine

The prescription only medicine which Boots supplies to help treat ED, if it's suitable for you, is Sildenafil. The medicine can help you respond to sexual stimulation by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis. After sex, the blood flows out of the penis and the erection fades away. Your pharmacist will tell you about how to take the tablet and how often, plus any possible side effects.
