What is Hepatitis A?

Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by a virus. It’s usually spread through faecal matter of an infected person. It's uncommon in the UK, but certain groups are at increased risk. Although most people recover within a couple of months, hepatitis A can occasionally last for many months and, in rare cases, can be life threatening if it causes liver failure. For those at high risk, the best way to help protect against hepatitis A is to complete a vaccination course.

What is the hepatitis A vaccination?

We offer two different types of hepatitis A vaccinations – a vaccine for hepatitis A only, and combined vaccine for hepatitis A and hepatitis B. If an employee requires protection against hepatitis A and B, then the combined vaccination may be a good option for them. Both are suitable for people 16 years and over.

The hepatitis A vaccination is a course of two injections which helps protect against the virus. The second dose is given six to 12 months after the initial vaccination. The full course of the hepatitis A vaccination offers protection for 25 years.

For the combined vaccination, three doses are needed over six months. The second dose is given one month after the first, and the third given five months after the second.

How many vaccinations will my employee need?

Hepatitis A

If your employee has no record of previous hepatitis A vaccinations, they can be given the full course of vaccinations at Boots. If they’ve only had a partial course of hepatitis A vaccinations, then they can complete their course using our private service. Individual vouchers can be purchased for the number of vaccines required to complete the course.

Hepatitis A and B combined

If your employee has no record of previous hepatitis A or hepatitis B vaccinations, they can be given the full course of the combined vaccine for hepatitis A and hepatitis B at Boots. But, if they’ve started a course of the combined vaccination with another provider, they won’t be able complete it at Boots. However, they can re-start the full course with us.  You should only purchase vouchers for the full course of the combined hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccination, as we can’t complete a partial course for the combined vaccine.

It’s important that the employee vaccination history is checked before selecting which voucher to purchase.

Knowing whether your employee needs vaccination for hepatitis A only or for both hepatitis A and hepatitis B will help you decide which vouchers to choose.

Is a blood test needed after the vaccination?

If you or your employees have the combined vaccine, we recommend a blood test to measure antibody levels and determine immunity against hepatitis B. The blood test should be taken one to four months after the last vaccination has been given. Depending on the result, another dose of the hepatitis B vaccine may be required.†

You can choose from the different immunity testing options provided by Medichecks. You can order at-home testing kits or arrange an appointment at an on-site phlebotomy clinic by emailing bootstesting@medichecks.com.

You or your employees can provide a blood sample with a finger prick test kit, which can be posted back to the lab to be tested. A doctor’s report is included with this test, but if this isn’t required you can opt out.

Test results are available within two to three days of the sample arriving at the laboratory. Your employees can access their results via an online portal. There will also be a PDF for them to download and share with their employer if required.
