Pneumonia is a serious chest infection, most common in the autumn and winter, that affects around one in 100 adults in the UK every year†.
Nearly 263,000 hospital admissions each year in England are due to pneumonia, and around one in four cases happen in adults under 65.†† Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria is the most common cause of pneumonia. Our service uses a vaccine called Prevenar 13®, which helps protect against 13 of the most common strains of this bacteria. You can find out more information about this vaccine here.
Pneumonia can affect anyone of any age, but it’s more common and can be more serious in certain groups of people including:
The vaccination is also useful for those travelling to countries which have higher levels of pneumococcal infections, including India, China and Vietnam.^
If you’re 65 or over, you’re eligible for a free NHS pneumonia vaccination. If you haven’t already had the NHS vaccination, speak to your GP about having this. Our private service does not replace the need for the NHS vaccination. The NHS pneumonia vaccination is a different type of vaccination to the one used in our private service. You may want to consider having both to help protect you even more against pneumonia.
You may be eligible for a free pneumonia vaccination from your GP if you’re under 65 and have a long-term health condition, like diabetes or a serious heart problem.^^
Learn more about the vaccination & side effectsThe vaccination can be given at any time of the year and only one vaccination is needed for long-lasting protection against pneumococcal pneumonia. No annual boosters are needed.
Our pharmacist will vaccinate into your upper arm so it’s best to wear a short-sleeved top to your appointment.
This isn’t a complete list and suitability will be checked before the vaccination is administered.
If you have a high temperature on the day of your appointment or you have any symptoms of COVID-19, your appointment will need to be rearranged.
