Primers have their perks – prepare to unleash their power

Ah, primer – the holy grail of make-up. When it comes to perfecting your look, there's no better place to start than the beginning. And that's exactly where we'll begin, talking you through primer 101, from what it does to why you need it.

What is primer?

Silky soft creams or gels, primers have the job of keeping your base in place all day long. Even better, they fill in fine lines and smooth out uneven texture – result!

But they're not just a one trick pony, ladies and gents. From illuminating primers that help to give your skin a radiant glow to mattifying primers that help combat excess shine, and even eyeshadow primers that help to lock your eye make-up look in place, they do it all.

How to apply primer

Say no to foundation and concealer right away, it’s time to prime. Apply a pea-sized amount to cleansed and moisturised skin, and use your fingertips to smooth over your face and neck. Once blended in and absorbed by your skin, you can apply your foundation or BB cream as normal.

Which primer is best for my skin?

Ace your base and your look by choosing the right primer for you. Firstly, work out what you want your primer to do for your skin, as some like the Benefit Porefessional Face Primer work hard to minimise those pesky pores, whilst others help to smooth the appearance of lines and wrinkles – say hello to the No7 Airbrush Away Primer. If hydration station is your destination, get some Fenty Beauty Pro Filt'r Hydrating Primer in your life.

Don’t forget to consider your skin type too! Luckily for you, we’ve done it for you.

If you want the best primer for dry skin then look for a primer that is ultra-hydrating, which will help to plump up your complexion and give your skin added moisture throughout the day. These might contain hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which draws moisture to the skin's surface.

If you’ve got oily skin, you might find that your make-up often slips off your skin during the day. A primer may help to prep your skin pre-make-up and essentially lock your look in place all day long, which for anyone with oily skin will know, is a total life-saver.

Look for mattifying formulas that will mop up any extra grease, allowing your make-up to last and last.

If your skin is tired or pale in appearance, then a radiance-boosting primer will help to warm up your complexion and give a youthful glow. There are colour-correcting primers, that help to boost radiance or primers that specifically include added light-reflecting particles, leaving your skin with a pearlescent finish.

Boost the benefits of your foundation for a flawless face. Make primer your make-up must-have.
