Erectile Dysfunction (ED) is a condition that can be treated

Men across the globe are witnessing the positive outcomes of treating erectile dysfunction in terms of improved sexual satisfaction and intimate relationships. Many men who suffer from erectile dysfunction may be hesitant to seek help due to feelings of shame and fear of how it may affect their sexual performance or relationships. Thankfully, there are effective treatments available.

What are the causes of Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is characterised by the difficulty to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual activity. It is caused by constricted blood vessels in the penis.

A number of things can cause or contribute to failing to get and keep an erection, like feeling stressed, worried or being tired. Other risk factors could be high cholesterol, obesity, smoking, hypertension, diabetes, depression or taking certain medicines. You should discuss your symptoms and these conditions with your doctor if you have not already done so.*

Erectile dysfunction & healthy lifestyle tips

Reduce your consumption of fatty foods and increase the amount of grilled or baked foods you eat.

Consuming foods high in fibre, such as beans and pulses, can help you maintain a healthy weight and keep you feeling fuller for longer. Aim to get 30g of fibre a day.

Engage in physical activity by doing strength training or by taking a 30 minute walk each day. Speak to your GP before starting any new forms of exercise if you have an existing medical condition or haven’t exercised in a long time.

Reduce alcohol consumption by drinking no more than 14 units per week and aim to have multiple days per week without any alcoholic beverages.

If you smoke, avoid activities or situations that may cause you to crave smoking. Stop smoking.

Speak with your GP prior to altering your lifestyle or amount of physical exercise if you have a pre-existing medical condition.

Frequently asked questions

Signs that you may be having issues with having erections include:

• Having an erection that is not firm enough for satisfactory intercourse.

• Experiencing an erection that does not last long enough for sexual activity.

• Getting an erection upon stimulation only or not at all.

It is important to bear in mind that some men may only occasionally have issues with getting an erection, while others may have difficulty more often.

If you are experiencing any signs of erectile problems, it’s recommended that you speak with your GP so that any underlying causes can be considered.

Erectile dysfunction doesn’t often go away on its own, without incorporating lifestyle changes or using ED medicine. You should speak to your GP for more advice.

Men in their twenties and thirties can still have erectile dysfunction. Around 25% of males in the UK who have erectile dysfunction (ED) are younger than 40.**

Frequent self-stimulation does not cause erectile dysfunction.

If you have experienced difficulty obtaining an erection on one or two occasions, it does not necessarily indicate that you have erectile dysfunction. Talking to your pharmacist or GP about this may be beneficial. A diagnosis of ED can also be made by a GP who would have access to your medical history.
