Put your best face forward with our easy foundation application guide

If you’re looking to take the guesswork out of complexion perfection, we’ve made it simple with tools and tips for flawless foundation.

Prepped and primed

Good foundation application is all in the groundwork, so start by double cleansing – the first cleanse will help to remove dirt, and the second will reach into your pores. Then grab that toner and sweep over your face with a cotton pad to help you achieve pore-fection.

Add a touch of serum followed by a moisturiser and leave to sink in,as this is a great way to step-up your prep before laying down the foundations. It’s then time to hit the prime-time and create a flawless base for your foundation with a primer.

If you’re wondering ‘What does a primer do?’ then read our need-to-know guide – primers are used to create a barrier between your skin and your make-up, resulting in longer lasting looks and a flawless finish.

How to apply foundation

When it comes to applying foundation, there’s a choice of tools for the job. Depending on your preferred technique and desired finish, you could use a foundation brush, make-up sponge, stippling brush or even your fingers.

Brush up on your technique

There are many different make-up brushes around, but three is the magic number when it comes to perfect foundation application – foundation brushes, make-up sponges and powder brushes.

Foundation brushes are great for applying liquid, mousse and stick foundations. If you’re looking for full coverage they allow for a quick, seamless application and you can easily layer up the product on those areas that need it. Apply foundation directly to the brush or dab onto your face, but it’s better to start in the centre of your face and blend the product out; making sure it goes all the way to the edge of your face.

Stippling brushes are also great for applying liquid and mousse foundations, as they can help to create a light, airbrushed finish, and may also help your make-up last longer – Bonus!

Apply foundation to the back of your hand and dab the stippling brush into the product, then start to stipple (in other words pat and dot) over your face. Then gently swirl the brush in circular motions to create a lovely finish.

If you’re applying a powder foundation then it will come as no surprise that powder brushes or kabuki brushes are your new best friends. Tap a small amount of powder into a small pot or the product lid, then dab in your brush and tap off any excess before applying to your face.

But if you’re looking for a quick everyday way to apply foundation, then let your fingers do the talking. Make sure your hands are clean and always start with a small amount of foundation, before gently dotting all over your face. Start from the centre of your face and blend out – patting and rubbing as you move along. Keep going until your foundation is invisible, and voila! Say hello to a naturally radiant look in a flash.

Make-up sponges

Foundation application has been shook up every since make-up sponges bounced on the scene, and they may take you back to those face painting days, but the various shapes and sizes mean every inch of your face can achieve the holy grail of foundation finishes.

To wet or not to wet? A dry sponge will drink up your foundation, so always dampen yours and rinse before adding any product. Then gently dab in a twisting motion, rather than rubbing or dragging across the skin. You can use different parts of the sponge for different areas of your face – that’s why the make-up sponges come in all shapes and sizes!

Don’t forget to keep on top of your sponge hygiene – we recommend rinsing after each use, and replacing every three months.

Setting your foundation

Finish with a dusting of translucent powder to help your make-up stay put all day long. Use a fluffy powder brush and sweep over your face, concentrating on any areas where you want to banish shine. Looking to last the night? Try a spritz (or two) of setting spray to help keep your make-up looking as strong at midnight as it did at midday.
