From gummies to tablets, make your wellness budget go further with these affordable multivitamins

Here at Boots, we love a beauty multitasker. And the same can be said when it comes to supporting our health and wellness. Cue: multivitamins, and thanks to the Big Boots Summer Sale and bevy of 3 for 2 offers**, they now deliver even more bang for your buck.

We round up seven great options to consider, to help support your daily nutritional requirements. But first, we speak to Boots nutritionist, Vicky Pennington, for some bite-size nutritional need-to-knows about multivitamins that will help your money go that much further.

What are some of the benefits of taking a multivitamin?

From the get-go, it’s important to highlight that a food-first approach is the best way to get your daily quota of important vitamins and minerals. That being said, there are of course going to be times when you may not always be able to meet those quotas – no judgement here, we’ve all been there.

In fact, recent stats show just how common this might be. “Significant numbers of people in the UK do not consume diets in line with the Eatwell Guide (our healthy eating guidance) and data from the most recent National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) shows a substantial proportion of the population have intakes of vitamins and minerals below recommended levels,” Vicky tells us.

“In an ideal world, we’d get all the nutrients we need from a healthy, well-balanced diet. But things don’t always work that way,” says Vicky. “Busy lifestyles, budget constraints, fad diets, eating a restrictive range of foods and confusion about what constitutes a healthy diet can all contribute to less-than-perfect intakes.” So don’t be hard on yourself if you do fall short.

“Sometimes we need additional support to meet our nutritional needs and/or achieve recommended intakes. Multivitamins can provide a reliable source of additional micronutrients to help bridge the ‘gaps’ for a period of time,” says Vicky.

Think of them as a helping hand for supporting your nutritional needs when life changes or circumstances cause your diet to be less balanced than usual.

Find your routine: what works best for you to remember to take your supplement daily.

How to take a multivitamin

While guidance can differ from product to product, there are some useful things to bear in mind as a starting point.

“Before you start taking a new supplement, always read the label,” recommends Vicky. “Most are best taken with a drink of water before or after a meal.”

And always speak to a pharmacist or GP for advice about supplements if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, are taking medicines or have a medical condition.

As for when to take them, “Many people find that taking supplements with breakfast helps them to remember to take them every day,” says Vicky.

“In my opinion, the most important consideration is to ‘find your routine’: what works best for you to remember to take your supplement daily.” Consistency is key.
