IMPORTANT ADVICE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH1

  • Vitamin D is the only vitamin the Department of Health advises the general population to supplement
  • Everyone aged five years and above should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10mcg of vitamin D during autumn and winter
  • People who aren’t often outdoors or who get little or no sunshine exposure should take a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D throughout the year

WHY DO BONES NEED VITAMIN D?

It’s calcium that gives bones their strength – and vitamin D plays an important role in the normal absorption of calcium. So without vitamin D, bones simply cannot absorb the calcium they need.

VITAMIN D IS ESSENTIAL FOR CHILDREN

Vitamin D is needed for the growth and development of bones in children.

Public Health England recommends that every child under the age of five years should be given a daily supplement all year round.2

‘CAN’T I GET ENOUGH VITAMIN D FROM THE SUN?’

From around October to April, the UK sun is so weak, we cannot make any vitamin D at all. The rest of the year, it is only enough for around 4 hours a day – between about 11am and 3pm. There are other problems too.

SUNSCREEN

It’s important to use sunscreen to protect our skin. But sun creams can block the sun rays that enable our skin to produce vitamin D.

OUR INDOOR LIFESTYLE

These days, children especially spend more time indoors than they used to. That’s why children can get life-long benefits through ensuring they get enough vitamin D to help support their growing bones.*

‘ISN’T THERE ENOUGH VITAMIN D IN FOOD?’

Unlike other vitamins, it’s difficult to get the recommended 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day from a healthy diet.
Here’s how much vitamin D there is in a normal portion of some common foods.

A few foods like oily fish have higher amounts of vitamin D (9.9 mcg in a portion of salmon). However, NHS Choices recommends maximum weekly limits such as four portions of oily fish a week for adults (two if you are pregnant or breastfeeding).
