What is dehydrated skin?
Dry skin vs. dehydrated skin
Dehydrated skin is very often confused with dry skin because the symptoms (dull, lack-lustre and tight) all overlap, but there is an important distinction to be made between the two.
Dry skin is a skin type which results from a lack of natural oils (sebum) in the skin, whereas dehydrated skin is a skin condition caused by a lack of water in the skin.
Causes
Transepidermal water loss
This term refers to the process of water passively evaporating through the skin and into the air. It is completely normal and takes place for everyone throughout the day. It’s this excessive amount of water loss that can then lead to dry and dehydrated skin. Therefore, whether you have a sensitive, combination or dry skin type – you can also suffer from dehydrated skin! However, the key difference to note is that dehydration can come and go whilst dry skin will persist.
The exposome
Transepidermal water loss occurs when the skin barrier becomes compromised, thus leading to skin dehydration – with the major cause of this being the exposome. This refers to all harmful, environmental, behavioural and lifestyle exposures to which an individual is subjected to throughout his or her life. These range from: stress, lack of sleep, bad food habits, UV exposure and pollution. The exposome encourages water to escape through the skins surface and alone generates 32ml of water loss per day on the face!
