What’s the secret to healthy skin?

As the skincare trends come and go – from glassy skin and K-beauty to skin-tellectualism – one thing we’ve learnt is that healthy-looking skin is always in. But achieving this skin goal is a little more complex than you might think.

Our skin health is impacted by many factors which can all wreak havoc on our skin. While we can’t control some of these (we’re talking things like hormones and the weather) we can have some reign over the others. Our top tips? Opt for a healthy lifestyle, aim to eat a healthy, balanced diet, be good to your gutget enough sleep each night and try to reduce or manage everyday stress. Every small change can gradually make a big impact.

So now you’ve got the basics, the next step for achieving healthy-looking skin is to know your skin type.

What’s your skin type?

Our skin has both internal and external factors to contend with such as hormones, lack of sleep, everyday stress, diet, pollutants and the weather. So knowing what to put on our skin can be challenging. In fact, using products that are unsuitable for your skin type can trigger issues such as blemishes, dryness and excess oil.

Want to break the cycle of trial and error? Get to know your skin type so you can build an effective skincare routine that’s tailored to your specific needs and concerns. Not sure which category you fall into? Let’s break it down…

Dry skin

If your skin feels tight with flaky or dry patches, chances are you have dry skin. The skin absorbs moisture quickly so it can often feel uncomfortable as well as making applying make-up more of a challenge.

Focus on products that soothe the skin, replenish moisture and maintain the skin barrier. Look for ingredients like ceramides to support the skin barrier, hyaluronic acid to retain moisture and niacinamide and vitamin B5 to help support even skin tone and help tackle those dry patches.

Oily skin

Can’t get through the day without a shiny forehead and your make-up slipping off? Then you likely have oily skin. The skin produces excess sebum which causes it to appear shiny and feel greasy, especially across the T-zone, making you more susceptible to clogged pores and blemishes.

Naturally, you may try to steer clear of the moisturising ingredients for fear of extra sheen, but instead, reach for the oil-free and water-based moisturisers. Incorporate products containing niacinamide in to help tone down excess oil as well as clay to absorb oil for a smooth, matte feel.

Combination skin

Think you have more than one skin type? You may have combination skin. Usually, combination skin includes shininess, blackheads and enlarged pores over the T-zone, while the cheeks are often dry with flaky patches.

If you have combination skin, it can be hard to strike a balance with products. Don’t over complicate it and stick to non-comedogenic cleansers, gentle exfoliants, lightweight moisturisers and clay masks, so you can retain the right level of moisture without clogging pores.

Sensitive skin

Redness, tightness and reactivity – these are all characteristics of sensitive skin. There are many things that can contribute to sensitive skin such as genetics and lifestyle factors. These can cause the skin to be more prone to irritation and dryness.

It’s best to keep your routine simple and avoid using any products containing fragrance, alcohol or harsh chemicals. Look out for products that are formulated for sensitive skin and contain ingredients that nourish and calm the skin such as chamomile, aloe vera, colloidal oatmeal and hyaluronic acid.

Not sure what your skin type is? Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and after 15-30 minutes, see how your skin looks and feels. Once you know your skin type, you can start making skincare swaps and building a routine that will cater to your concerns. Want to know more about the different skin types? How do I know my skin concerns?

The terms ‘skin type’ and ‘skin concern’ are often used in conjunction which can sometimes make distinguishing your skin concerns a little more difficult. For example, you may be prone to blemishes which may lead you to think you have oily skin, when in fact, blemishes can be a short-term skin concern that’s made worse by using the wrong products.

The first step is to understand your skin type. The rule of thumb? Your basic skincare routine should be targeted towards your skin type and any skin concerns (such as rosacea), should be treated with specific ingredients.

Whatever your skin concern – from blemishes and uneven skin texture to eczema and psoriasis – we’re here to help you achieve your skincare goals. After all, everyone deserves to feel comfortable in their own skin.

Understanding psoriasis, eczema & rosacea

Rashes, bumps, redness and itching are all symptoms of psoriasis, eczema and rosacea. While each of these skin conditions are different, some of the symptoms can be soothed with topical cream treatments, which we’ll get into soon. But first, let’s find out a bit more about each one.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a long-term skin condition that causes patches of itchy and scaly skin on the elbows, knees, scalp and back, although it can occur anywhere on the body. It’s thought to be linked to a problem with the immune system which happens when too many new skin cells are made and replaced too quickly.

Eczema

Eczema describes a group of conditions that cause dry, irritated, itchy, red and cracked skin. There are a few different types of eczema and for some people, eczema can be short-term but for others it can be a long-term condition.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a common skin condition that mainly affects the cheeks, nose and chin. It’s causes inflammation in the face and is characterised by redness, flushing and red bumps. These symptoms can come and go in severity but it’s usually diagnosed as a long-term condition.
