All you need to know from the experts in clearer skin

Let’s help clear it up

When it comes to spots and acne, there’s a lot of misconception, stigma and misinformation out there.

Getting your head around knowing what’s what (and what’s not) can help you find the things that work for you – and avoid anything that may make the situation worse.

Myth: Acne is caused by specific foods

So far, research into links between acne and food reveals little conclusive evidence. For a small select group of sufferers, reducing sugar or dairy may be of benefit but this approach is unlikely to help everyone who has acne.

All this ‘diet advice’ does is cause people to start changing their diet, excluding food groups, making substitutions, which may in fact make things worse! The reality is that those spots have been forming for some time already, deep in the pore, and have not ‘suddenly appeared’ today because of eating some chips at 6pm yesterday.

Myth: Face masks clear acne

If anything, acne sufferers tend to over wash their faces! Remember that it develops because of a combination of genetics, hormones, oil production and dead skin cells. Skin cells are naturally being shed inside of your hair follicles all the time, mixing with your skin’s sebum - or oil, which is also already inside of your hair follicles.

Bacteria that naturally live on your skin and in the follicles thrive on this skin cell/oil feast, helping them multiply rapidly inside of the blocked pore, triggering irritation and inflammation aka ‘the spot! The health benefits of exercise far outweigh any weak links with acne.

Myth: Moisturiser/ sunscreen is bad for acne

Sunscreen is an important defence against the risk of skin cancer, premature ageing and uneven skin tone/marks. Often, ingredients used to help treat acne or keep skin clear have an exfoliant effect or can weaken the skin barrier - moisturising helps to keep skin hydrated and protected against dryness and irritation.

The problem with some general moisturisers and sunscreens is that they might be quite oily, leading to acne-causing blockages in the follicles (pores). The answer is to choose moisturisers and sunscreens that are labelled non-comedogenic – which means they won’t block pores.

Visit the Boots Online Doctor for help with mild to moderate acne. If your acne is not responding to over the counter treatment, or you feel it is getting worse, please do seek advice from a GP. Under-treatment of some forms of acne can increase the risk of scarring.
