To get the proper benefits of your sun cream make sure you follow the product's instructions.

Please note: This recommendation is the minimum that should be used and is based on spending a 'sensible' amount of time in the sun - that's up to a couple of hours. It also includes a 'margin of safety' compared to the National Protection Level calculation. Boots recommends using at least SPF 15 whenever you are in the sun but if in doubt, go for a higher SPF. Remember to take to the shade when the sun is hottest, between 11am and 3pm in the UK. Don't forget your hat and sunglasses too.

What is UVA & UVB?

Sun damage is caused by two types of ultraviolet light, UVA and UVB. UVA penetrates deeper and is mainly responsible for ageing. UVB penetrates less deeply but also causes sunburn.

Top tip: You can still tan through an SPF 50+ product. The colour will take a few more days to appear, but it will last much longer and you have protected your skin against excessive damage.

The level of UVA protection a sun cream gives is shown by its star rating. Boots Soltan is five star rated, because it gives the highest level of protection against UVA. The level of protection against burning is shown by the SPF. Higher SPFs give more protection.

Did you know? The amount of UV light present is less about temperature but more about the time of year and how close you are to the equator? The closer you are to the equator, the more UV there is. While UV light is still present on an overcast day, because it can penetrate cloud cover, it is higher the closer you are to midsummer's day.

Remember: While closely woven fabrics such as cotton provide exceptionally high protection, loosely woven fabrics will allow some UV through.
