Some simple tips to help you live with back pain

Back pain can be all-consuming, putting a stop to almost all the things you enjoy doing on a day-to-day basis. If you need advice on looking after your back and helping soothe the pain, your Boots pharmacist can help and be your first port of call.

However, here are a few tips that can help ease discomfort:

Help prevent back pain

  • Sudden back pain can be a result of an injury or strain. You’re more likely to experience this as you get older, or if you are overweight. Modifying your activities and working towards reducing your BMI can help
  • Stay as active as possible and try to continue moving – this is one of the most important things you can do, as resting for long periods is likely to make your back pain worse

Treatment of back pain

  • When a flare-up hits, you might experience acute pain and want to consider some pain relief. Paracetamol or an anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen may make you more comfortable, pop in store to see your local Boots pharmacist or see your GP for guidance on which medicines might help you during your flare-ups. Remember to always read the label and never exceed the stated dosage. If you’re on other medication, check with your GP or a pharmacist that pain relief is safe to take alongside it
  • Apply heat two or three times a day for 20 to 30 minutes, using a heating pad, hot shower, or hot pack. Heat seems to be effective for pain and stiffness related to inactivity of a joint. If you are using an electric heating pad, avoid falling asleep while the pad is on. If you think you might fall asleep, set an alarm clock to go off in 20 minutes. Use heating pads set on low or medium, never on high
  • Consider trying TENS nerve stimulators to help manage your pain. Electrical stimulation to the area of pain can make the nerves less receptive and sensitive to pain
  • If your back  pain is severe, significantly affects your mobility or lasts for a few days, see your GP

  • Where possible, try to remain active. Try a class that helps you learn how to stretch and breathe, such as yoga or Pilates. Always make sure you take a class with a qualified instructor. Have a word with them about your back pain at the start of the class. Remember to not overdo it, and always warm up first
  • If you sleep on your side and it’s painful, put a thin cushion between your legs. This can help ease lower back pain, preventing your upper leg from pulling your spine out of alignment, thus reducing stress on your lower back
