What is shingles?

Shingles is caused by the reactivation of varicella-zoster – the virus that causes chickenpox. If you’ve had chickenpox, this virus stays inside your body and can become activated during times of stress or infection.

Why should I get vaccinated against shingles?

It’s estimated that up to 1 in 3 people will get shingles and the risk increases with age.^

Shingles causes a painful blistering rash that can take up to four weeks to heal and, in some cases, can lead to long-term pain known as Post Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN) that can last for months or even years. Shingles can be passed on to other people while the blisters are weeping so getting vaccinated can help to protect both you and others from shingles and PHN.

If you’re aged between 70 and 79, you may be eligible for a free NHS shingles vaccination. We don’t offer the NHS shingles service at Boots so please ask your GP for more information.

How effective is the shingles vaccine?

Our service uses a vaccine called Shingrix, which is proven to be up to 90% effective at preventing shingles in clinical trials.^^

It’s given in two doses, with the second being administered two to six months after the first. It’s important to have both doses to get the full benefits of protection – our pharmacy team can book you in for your second dose after you’ve had the first.
