Sildenafil strengths & dosages
Sildenafil is an erectile dysfunction (ED) medicine which can be used to help men, aged 18 and over, who struggle to get and maintain an erection hard enough for sex. If you haven’t heard of Sildenafil then you might have heard of Viagra, also known as the ‘blue pill’. Sildenafil is the generic version of the branded Viagra, which means it contains the same active ingredient (sildenafil citrate) and works in the same way as Viagra. It also has similar side effects.
Sildenafil is available through our Erectile Dysfunction Online Clinic as one of a number of medicines to help treat the symptoms of ED. You’ll only be offered treatment once you’ve completed an online consultation to check that a medicine is suitable for you. If you’ve never used our service before and it is suitable for you, you could be prescribed the 50mg Sildenafil starter strength (subject to availability and clinician approval).
What Sildenafil dose works most effectively for you can depend on a number of factors such as your health and lifestyle choices, as well as the severity of your ED symptoms. The 50mg dose will usually be satisfactory for most men living with erectile dysfunction.
What strengths are available through the Boots Erectile Dysfunction Online Clinic?
There are currently three different Sildenafil strengths available through the Boots Erectile Dysfunction Online Clinic: Sildenafil 25mg, Sildenafil 50mg and Sildenafil 100mg. All Sildenafil strengths available through the clinic are subject to suitability and clinician approval. Prices start from £10.00.
This is the lowest Sildenafil dosage we have available through our clinic. It’s sometimes considered for men who have certain medical conditions or people who take certain medication. Sildenafil 25mg will only be available to first time users of our online clinic if they have been previously prescribed Sildenafil 25mg by a GP or an online doctor. Sildenafil 25mg may also be suitable for people who experience side effects with the 50mg starter dose.
Sildenafil 50mg is the most commonly prescribed Sildenafil dosage, and is often the recommended starter dose for people new to the drug. In a clinical trial, 74 percent of men reported that sildenafil 50mg helped with their erections. If 50mg tablets don’t help you get an erection hard enough for sex, our clinicians may prescribe you the 100mg dose if suitable.
Sildenafil 100mg is the highest Sildenafil dosage available, and may be prescribed to people who can’t get an erection hard enough for sex when using the lower dose. The effects of the tablet will last for the same amount of time as the 25mg and 50mg Sildenafil tablets, but you may experience more side effects.
How often should I take my prescribed Sildenafil dosage?
Sildenafil, no matter what strength you have been prescribed, should never be taken more than once a day. It’s important that you don’t exceed the Sildenafil dosage prescribed through our clinic or your GP, as doing this could be harmful to your health and won’t increase the effectiveness of the drug. Taking more than your prescribed Sildenafil dosage could result in an increase in side effects and their severity.
If you take more than your prescribed Sildenafil dosage, contact your GP or call 111 immediately.
What are the side effects of Sildenafil?
You might encounter side effects with all oral ED treatments, and Sildenafil is no different. The most common (may affect up to one in 10 people) side effects you could get when taking Sildenafil include:
• Facial flushing
• Stuffy nose
• Visual disturbances or blurred vision
• Hot flush (a sudden feeling of heat in your upper body)
Although these are the side effects you’re most likely to come across when taking Sildenafil, they aren’t the only ones. You can find a full breakdown of common, uncommon and rare side effects of Sildenafil by looking at the patient information leaflet.
What should I do if the Sildenafil dosage doesn’t work for me?
It can take up to eight separate attempts for Sildenafil to work effectively. If you’re not having any success with your Sildenafil dosage after eight tries, you could consider moving on to a higher strength or consider a different oral treatment. There are multiple different oral treatments available through the Boots Erectile Dysfunction Online Clinic, including Cialis, Tadalafil, Spedra and Levitra. All are subject to an online consultation and clinician approval.
Factors such as smoking, drinking alcohol or eating a heavy meal before taking the tablet can affect how well Sildenafil works.
There’s also a range of other ways you can treat ED without oral drugs.
Should I speak to my doctor?
It’s important to speak to your doctor if you’re having problems getting an erection. In some cases ED may be a symptom of an underlying medical condition such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson’s disease. It might also be a symptom of psychological problems such as stress, anxiety or depression, in which case you may also benefit from counselling to address why you struggle to get an erection.
Erectile dysfunction is a common condition that affects most men (either as a one-off incident or a recurring problem) at some point in their lives, and is certainly nothing to be embarrassed about.
