High fashion sunglasses on the high street? Only at Boots Opticians

A good pair of sunglasses can totally complete an outfit, but the best sunnies are far more than just a fashion accessory.

From cat eyes to aviators, tinted lenses to polarised lenses, here’s what to look out for when choosing your next pair of shades…

Why do I need sunglasses?

Most of us know the dangers of not wearing sun cream, but what about when we don’t wear sunglasses?

It turns out that our eyes are up to 10 times more sensitive to UV damage than our skin. From cataracts (that’s where the lens gradually clouds and your vision becomes blurry) to macular degeneration (where the central part of your vision fades), exposing our eyes to UV light could have damaging long-term effects. Want to get totally clued up? Learn the truth about sunglasses over here.

How do I choose the best sunglasses?

Like your sun cream, sunglasses should have the right amount of UVA and UVB protection.

When choosing your sunnies, it’s important to look for ones that have the ‘International Standard ISO 12312-1:2013 (en)’. Here at Boots Opticians, you can rest assured that all of our sunglasses meet these requirements.

Additionally, all of our sunglasses are available with prescription or non-prescription lenses. An eye test isn’t required, just a valid prescription within two years.

Can I add extra features?

If you spend a lot of time driving or enjoying activities such as fishing or skiing, you could consider adding polarised lenses. These lenses help to reduce glare (that’s when light reflects off surfaces like roads, water and windows), and can be added to your sunglasses for an additional £70.

And what about tinted lenses? Although the colour of your tint won’t affect the level of UV protection, tints can help reduce eye strain, improve contrast and enhance depth awareness. From green, grey and brown to mirrored blue and silver, our in-store opticians will help you choose a tint that’s right for your lifestyle.
