Heard about laser eye surgery & want to know more? You’ve come to the right place

Thinking about laser eye surgery, but not sure if it’s right for you? It’s time for a little laser eye surgery 101 – and a recap on the other treatment options to help correct your vision.

What is laser eye surgery?

Every year over 100,000 people in the UK decide to give laser eye surgery a go. It’s one of the most popular procedures that people choose to have in the world today, with over 30 million people now viewing life in greater clarity thanks to successful eye surgery.

How does laser eye surgery work?

Laser eye surgery is a procedure which corrects eye conditions such as short sight, long sight and astigmatism. Laser technology is used to reshape the eye’s cornea, correcting any imperfections which may be affecting your vision and improving the eye’s ability to focus.

When carried out by a qualified ophthalmologist, laser eye surgery is considered an effective procedure which can give you clearer, sharper vision.

What happens during the surgery?

Laser eye surgery can be carried out on both eyes during the same procedure. Patients are usually given anaesthetic drops so you won’t feel any discomfort. It should be all over in about 20 minutes, but the laser part may only last for one or two minutes in total. There’s no need for an overnight stay either – bonus! You’ll need to have regular check-ups after the op, but that’s just to make sure the eye is healing as it should be.

Is laser eye surgery safe?

As with all surgical procedures, there is some risk, but the chances of complications with laser eye surgery are small. Complications happen in less than one percent of cases and if complications do happen, then most of the time they can be sorted out by more treatment.

Laser eye surgery is considered so safe that it’s used by the NHS. Still, it’s best to do your research so you’re fully informed before you make the decision to have laser eye surgery.

Do Boots Opticians offer laser eye surgery?

We don’t currently offer the procedure, but our optometrists can discuss that option with you depending on your vision needs. Just ask your optometrist after you’ve had your next eye test.
