If COVID-19 lockdowns and tier restrictions have taught us anything, it's how to have fun at home

Whether you’re self-isolating because you or someone you live with has tested positive for COVID-19 (coronavirus), or you’re spending more time at home due to government restrictions, we’re here to help.

From cook-alongs and crafts to podcasts and pampering, let’s inspire you with 18 activities you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home. Spoiler alert: there’s no banana bread in sight!

Cook-along

Going out to dinner may be off the cards, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy delicious (and healthy!) food.

Popular restaurant chains have shared recipes online for some of their signature dishes, so why not get some friends together via video call and get cooking? Katsu curry anyone?

Get your game face on

If you’re isolating with others, why not crack out one of the classics (we’re talking Scrabble, Connect 4 or Monopoly)? These go-tos always deliver come game night!

If you’re isolating alone, don’t fret. You could get your friends together for a virtual quiz night or go solo with an old-school jigsaw.

Pamper night

Beauty treatments at your fave salon may be a no-go, so there’s never been a better time to take matters into your own hands.

Whether you get glam with a DIY manicure or wind down with a face mask, a little bit of self-care goes a long way. Here are some other ways to practise self-care at home.

Get reading

That book you got for Christmas? Now’s the time to tackle it! Whether you’re a self-confessed book worm or a total newbie, flick the kettle on, put your feet up and get lost in a good story.

Host a virtual book club

If the above goes down well, try taking it one step further. Choose a book for you and your friends to read, then get together one evening (virtually, of course) and discuss your thoughts and opinions.

Start by asking simple questions. Which character did you like best? Then get to the nitty gritty. If you could ask the author anything, what would it be?

Wash your make-up brushes

Admit it. This has been on your to-do list for weeeeeks.

Granted it’s a bit of a chore, but without a clean set of make-up brushes, chances are you’re (accidentally!) spreading dirt and bacteria across your face. Get your hands on a brush cleanser and get to work. It should help to condition, clean, disinfect and extend the life of your brushes. What’s not to love?

Organise your wardrobe

Again, not the most glamourous activity, but there’s nothing like a rejig and declutter to get a spring back in your step.

If you find anything you don’t want anymore, make sure you start a giveaway pile to donate to a charity shop or a loved one when this is all over.

Listen to a podcast

Completed every TV streaming service there is? We feel you.

Whether you’re into health, business, comedy, politics, sport, technology or feminism, there’s a podcast out there that’s right for you. Plus, if you’re feeling up to it, podcasts are perfect for multi-tasking. Go on, get your headphones out and tackle that wardrobe while you listen.

Have a pizza-making night

Some things are worth going the extra mile for – homemade pizza being one of them. Just don’t have one every night! Why not use your time at home to master the technique of kneading dough and creating an authentic tomato base? Then all that’s left to do is get creative with your toppings. Goodbye Margherita, hello peach and prosciutto!

Don't get lost in translation

Mastering a foreign language from the comfort of your home has never been so simple thanks to apps, online courses and one-to-one virtual lessons.

Whether you're a beginner looking to pick up a few useful phrases, or you’re a bit of a pro who’s looking to brush up, we have two words for you – bonne chance (that’s good luck in French, BTW)!

Update your CV

Even if you’re not searching for a new job, it’s great to stay on top of your CV.

CVs tend to include your most recent, relevant and valuable skills and qualifications, as well as experiences and qualities. Go get ‘em!

Get crafty

From cross stitch to colouring, felting to finger-painting, set yourself an artsy challenge and try your hand at something new. It might help take your mind off the current situation – at least for a while.

DIY

Whether you’re opening a toolbox for the first time or you’re a DIY veteran, there are plenty of tasks you could tackle while at home (providing you’re feeling well enough, of course).

From upcycling an old cabinet to bleeding your radiators, a bit of DIY is sure to bring some satisfaction to your self-isolation.

Hit the gym (in your living room)

In case you missed it, Joe Wicks is a pretty big deal right now. It doesn’t matter if you’re an exercise newbie – his YouTube channel is jam-packed with workouts suitable for all ages and abilities.

Not your thing? Try a virtual yoga, dance or weights class instead. Head this way to read all about the benefits of exercise.

If you have a medical condition please speak to your GP before embarking on new forms of exercise.

Bring the cinema home

Complete with comfy cushions, blankets, bed socks, fairy lights and copious amounts of popcorn, why not have a night in at the ‘cinema’ (minus the queues and annoying packet rustlers).

Whatever film you opt for, make sure you dim the lights and immerse yourself in the experience… no phones allowed!

Support a local restaurant

Although many local restaurants and pubs have had to close their doors because of coronavirus tier restrictions, lots are still open for delivery. If you can afford to, why not take a night off cooking and indulge in some delicious grub? You could even get all dressed up, light some candles and pretend you’ve gone out for a meal.

Host a virtual cheese-tasting night

Calling all cheese lovers!

From gouda and vintage cheddar to brie and stilton, start by sending your virtual guests a list of cheeses to buy before the session, as well as a range of crackers and garnishes. On the night, ask everyone to score each cheese out of five and discuss.

Plan your next adventure

Sometimes we need a little reminder that better times are coming, and what better way to do this than planning your next getaway?

From city breaks to beach escapes, start by setting a budget then checking out accommodation and activities. It’s great to have something to look forward to!

So there you have it. Don't let staying at home get in the way of good books, good friends and good meals. Enjoy!
