Bladder weakness doesn’t have to rule your life, and it shouldn’t hold you back from doing the things you love – you can still live life the way you want to. Take a look at our tips for managing in everyday life.
It can be tough to cope throughout your working day, but there are some things that can help. Telling a colleague or your manager can help you feel more at ease, and make life a bit easier. Even if you don’t feel comfortable speaking to someone, you could try to plan your toilet trips around calls or meetings, as well as trying to go regularly.
You’ve got your gym gear on, workout playlist pumping, ready and raring to go… until you feel the little leak. Sound familiar? It’s particularly common to experience leaks when you exercise, but it doesn’t have to be a problem.
Heavy lifting can trigger incontinence, so if you’re conscious of having an accident then it might be best to avoid the weights section in the gym – but as long as you’re equipped with the right protection, you’ll be good to go. It might just be a case of opting for a pad rather than a liner, or going for a higher absorbency product, but ultimately there’s no reason not to get out there and smash those fitness goals!
Birthday parties, work dos, nights on the town – there’s always something in the calendar, but how can you go out if you’ve got to worry about little accidents? Quite easily, actually! A little preparation can go a long way when it comes to your social life. Why not try to plan your pit stops before you start your night, so you’ll know where the toilets are and not be caught off guard?
Eating & drinking
Some foods can make the symptoms of an overactive bladder worse, such as spicy curries or acidic fruits, so it’s a good idea to try and avoid them. The same goes for drinks; coffee and alcohol are both diuretics and can irritate the bladder, causing you to feel the urge to go more often. Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to give up your morning pick-me-up or glass of red wine on a Friday night, but you might want to consider cutting down a little to feel the benefits.
