LEARN MORE ABOUT HANA®

WHAT IS HANA®

Hana® is a daily, oral hormonal contraceptive (often called ‘the pill’) used to prevent pregnancy for women of childbearing age. Hana® is a progestogen-only pill (also known as ‘POP’ or the ‘mini pill’) containing a small amount of one type of female sex hormone – a progestogen called desogestrel.

Unlike the combined pill, Hana® does not contain any oestrogen hormone so it can be used if the combined pill (which contains oestrogen as well as a progestogen) is not suitable. Hana® can also be taken if you’re breastfeeding.

Hana® is taken every day, at the same time, with no break between packs. When used correctly, Hana® is over 99 percent effective.

HOW DOES HANA® WORK?

Hana® contains desogestrel, which helps prevent pregnancy by working to stop ovulation (i.e. the ovaries don’t release an egg) so there’s nothing for sperm to fertilise. It also works by altering cervical mucus to make it more difficult for sperm to travel to the uterus.

Hana® is effective straight away if you take it on day one of your period. If you start using it at a different point of your menstrual cycle, you should use a barrier method of contraception, such as condoms, as an extra precaution for the first seven days.

WHO IS HANA® SUITABLE FOR?

Hana® is suitable for anyone who has had their first period and it can be taken until the menopause, unless there is a medical reason it shouldn’t be used.

Hana® is suitable for those who can’t use oestrogen-based methods of contraception (such as the combined pill). That includes people who smoke, who are overweight and who have high blood pressure.

Hana® is also suitable while breastfeeding and can be used following childbirth. It can be started at any time during the first 21 days after birth. If started after day 21, a condom should be used for seven days in addition to taking the pill as an extra precaution.

HOW DO I ORDER HANA® ON BOOTS.COM?

You can buy Hana® online by adding it to your basket. You will then be asked to complete a short online questionnaire so that we can check Hana® is right for you. Your answers will be reviewed by a pharmacist and, if Hana® is suitable for you to use, your order will be processed within 24 hours. Your medicine will be sent in discreet packaging to your local Boots store or your home address – whichever is most convenient for you.

CAN I BUY HANA® IN STORE?

You can also buy Hana® at your local Boots if you’d like to use it the same day or if you’d prefer to talk to a pharmacist. The pharmacist will ask you a few general health questions – nothing embarrassing – and if Hana® is suitable for you, you can buy it over the counter from the pharmacist there and then.

WHO IS HANA® NOT SUITABLE FOR?

You shouldn’t use Hana® if you suspect that you could be pregnant. If you’re in doubt, you should take a pregnancy test before taking it, to rule out the possibility of pregnancy. There is no evidence that Hana® could harm a pregnancy or the unborn child.

You should not use Hana® if:

• You are allergic to desogestrel or any of the other ingredients of Hana®

• You have known or suspected sex steroid sensitive malignancies

• You have, or have had, breast, ovarian or uterine cancer

• You have, or have had, a severe liver disorder or liver cancer

• You have active venous thrombosis or pulmonary embolism

• You have unexplained bleeding between periods or after sex

There are a few medicines and herbal remedies that can impact effectiveness so it’s important to check before taking Hana®. You should also consult a doctor before using Hana® if you have epilepsy, tuberculosis, chloasma or if you have type 1 or 2 diabetes.

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS OF HANA®?

Hana® is generally well tolerated. Examples of possible side effects include mood swings, increase in acne, and breast discomfort.

WHAT EFFECT WILL HANA® HAVE ON MY PERIOD?

The effect on periods can vary. Some women will have bleeding less often, or none at all and some will have bleeding more often. Bleeding patterns may settle with time. A change in your bleeding pattern is not something you should normally be worried about if you are taking your pill as directed. You should continue to take Hana® every day, including when you have periods. If you start to bleed after intercourse, seek medical advice.

STOPPING HANA®

If you decide you want to become pregnant, simply stop taking Hana®. Taking Hana will not delay your ability to get pregnant when you stop taking it. Your natural menstrual cycle returns very quickly. If you are not planning on becoming pregnant right away, you should use another form of contraception like condoms immediately.
