What are Ceramides?
Ceramides are essential components of the outermost layer of the epidermis, and are naturally occurring lipids produced by your skin. Ceramides help support the skin’s barrier layer for moisture retention and help hold healthy cells together, leaving skin with a hydrated, smooth, and healthy look.
How do Ceramides work?
To better understand how Ceramides work, think of your skin as a brick wall. Your skin cells are the bricks, while ceramides and other lipids make up the mortar that holds them together. As skin loses its ability to replenish ceramides, it can no longer sufficiently bind those skin cells together, resulting in skin that loses its firmness and clarity and looks dry and dull.
When do Ceramides start to decrease and why?
Ceramide levels drop at an alarming rate after the age of 30 (by 43% in your 30’s and 60% in your 40’s). This is all part of the natural ageing process and happens to everyone, so it’s vital to replenish ceramides starting in our 30’s.
