What causes yellow teeth?

Yellow teeth occurs when the hard, white surface of your teeth, called the enamel, begins to fade away or is eroded by acids from certain snacks or drinks. Underneath the enamel is a pale brown substance called dentin which, as the enamel becomes more and more worn away, begins to show through. This can cause previously white teeth to become yellow teeth.

Now, just because your teeth may be slightly yellow this doesn’t necessarily mean you aren’t looking after them. Very few people have naturally brilliant whites, and most people have a natural tinge of grey or yellow in their teeth.

You certainly don’t have to remove the above foods from your diet completely just to try and avoid getting yellow teeth. There are ways you can manage this, such as drinking water over other beverages, or you may want to consider rinsing your mouth with water within half-hour of eating to help, and don’t forget that it’s important to brush your teeth twice a day.

Food and drink account for a large amount of yellow and stained teeth causes, but they aren’t the only reasons. If what you’re eating and drinking aren’t causing you to have yellow teeth, then consider the following factors:

• Smoking. As well as being bad for you in a variety of different ways, the chemicals in tobacco smoke are a big cause of yellow teeth

• Wear. Old age can cause yellow teeth as enamel naturally thins over time

• Genetics. If you’ve got family members or parents with yellow teeth, you’re likely to be prone to them too
