Born in the heart of the Bordeaux region, on the Château Smith Haut Lafitte wine-growing estate, Caudalie is a fully independent, family-owned French skincare brand that draws its expertise from active ingredients derived from the vine and grapes. Caudalie was established in 1995, after founders Mathilde and Bertrand Thomas met Professor Vercauteren, Laboratory Director of the Pharmacy University of Bordeaux, who specialised in Polyphenols. Polyphenols are natural active ingredients derived from grape seeds with extraordinary antioxidant powers. Two years of research later, a patent was filed and the first Caudalie skincare products were created.
Caudalie’s mission? To become the most effective, clean and natural brand, and also the most environmentally-friendly beauty brand.
Clean & natural
All of our skincare products are created in France at our Natural Formulation Laboratory in the French Cosmetic Valley. Our team of expert formulators surpass themselves every day to create a new generation of highly natural skincare. All of Caudalie’s products follow a very strict naturality charter which we call our “Cosm’ethics” by which we have excluded 60 undesirable substances from our formulas in favour of natural ingredients. Since 2020, we have been committed to ensuring that all our formulas have a minimum of 95% natural origin ingredients*, to offer even more transparency for our consumers.
Patent & ingredients
Effectiveness has always been at the heart of what we do. All our products are made using innovative and patented ingredients, developed in partnership with the best anti-ageing research laboratories such as Harvard Medical School and Dr David Sinclair, with whom we have collaborated since 2013. The research we have undertaken together has led to the discovery of unique ingredients and exclusive patents that are at the cutting edge of anti-ageing innovation, for which Caudalie is a pioneer.
1% for the planet
Our combat for more sustainable practices doesn’t stop there. Caudalie has been involved with the 1% For The Planet network since 2012, and donates 1% of its turnover to environmental NGOs that help the regions of the world most threatened by deforestation and where biodiversity is in danger. As the top world skincare contributor and largest contributer in Europe, we will have planted nine million trees by the end of 2021, enabling us to potentially off-set our CO2 emissions by up to four times.
