- Vicky Pennington, Boots Nutritionist.
What is Psyllium Husk?
Psyllium Husk (also known as Ispaghula Husk) comes from a plant commonly grown in India and is known for being naturally high in fibre. Our fine powder is the result of grinding the plant seeds’ outer layer, where the fibre is highly concentrated.
Psyllium Husk is classed as a soluble fibre. Some types of fibre can bulk up your stools which influences the speed at which food moves through the gut. This is known as gut transit time. Fibre adds bulk to stools by absorbing water which also softens them, making them easier to pass. Because Psyllium is a nondigestible fibre, when it reaches the large intestine it also helps feed live friendly bacteria that live there.
Suitable for:
Suitable for adults aged 18 years and over.
Suitable for those following a vegetarian, vegan or keto (low carb) diet.
How to Use:
Care should be taken to avoid increasing fibre intake in your diet too quickly, as it can lead to excess gas & bloating. We suggest you start with just half a teaspoon and then increase the amount according to tolerance.
We recommend 1 level teaspoon a day (approx. 3g of powder), adding it into everyday food & drinks such as a glass of fruit juice, smoothie, or cold water. Alternatively, mix with porridge or soup. If required, up to 2 teaspoons / 6g can be taken per day. This will provide around 20% of your recommended daily intake of fibre.
Always take Psyllium Husk powder with plenty of liquid.
Don’t be alarmed if your Psyllium Husk does not fully dissolve, as it is known to take on a gel-like consistency on contact with liquid.
