Whether you’re fighting fine lines, wrinkles or pore size, there will be one to suit your skin type in our selection

These days, we are quite literally bombarded with skincare products. And we love it. There are toners touted to decrease pore size, creams that help fight fine lines and winkles, serums to soothe sensitive skin – almost everything, really. It is, at times, slightly overwhelming. But what if there was an active ingredient that could do all of this in a single skincare product? Allow us to introduce you to niacinamide and, more pointedly, niacinamide serums.

What is niacinamide?

If you’re someone with a fastidious skincare routine, you’re probably already accustomed to using products containing vitamins. After all, if they help to benefit our bodies then chances are that they’ll benefit us when applied topically, too. Some you may well already use include vitamin A (what retinol is derived from), vitamin E (which helps with moisture) and vitamin C (to brighten and help with pollution, amongst other things). Niacinamide, as renowned aesthetician and skin expert, Dija Ayodele tells us, “is part of the vitamin B complex”.

What does niacinamide do?

Many things. Firstly, “it plays an essential role in maintaining a healthy skin barrier. It does this by helping the skin to retain moisture,” says Dija. Of course, this makes it a wonderful ingredient for dry skin. But that’s not it’s only use: “It is also a good ingredient for minimising enlarged pores,” Dija continues, which basically means that oily skin types can also appreciate the benefits of niacinamide. Furthermore, it can also be credited with “providing a general brightness to dull skin tones,” she adds. Lastly, research shows that it doesn’t just protect skin cells by maintaining a healthy skin barrier, it renews them, keeping fine lines and wrinkles somewhat at bay.
