Autumn/winter 2011-12 trend report: Hair

Copy the catwalk trends this season with our rundown of five runway favourites.

The twist

Meet the new generation of updos! This style helps show off shiny, glossy locks and can be worn casual like Antonio Marras or as a modern take on the 1940s signature style like Badgley Mischka. Just don't forget your hairspray and lots of grips to ensure your 'do stays put all day.

High barnet

From heaven-high beehive to maxi-topknot and beyond, this season the sky's the limit when it comes to big hair. Tip: When you're creating a style with this much personality, keep the rest of your look simple – emphasise either lips like Arzu Kaprol or eyes like Bibhu Mohapatra. Alternatively, take a cue from Donna Karan and use autumnal colours like pinks and browns to decorate the face.

Go with the low

At the opposite end of the scale, the cool kids are wearing their ponies at the nape of the neck this season. The Brioni catwalk demonstrated the smooth 'n' sleek low pony, whereas Pedro Lourenco opted for tenderly tousled and Valentino went all out and accessorised with an oh-so-sophisticated black hair band. What did they have in common? They all wrapped a section of hair around the ponyband – visible hair ties are so last season!

Soft focus

If you're opting for a casual updo this season, stay on-trend by pulling loose a few tendrils to frame the face. Make little plaits like Byblos, create casual waves like Behnaz Sarafpour or simply let hair hang like Lanvin.

Blunt object

Thinking of going for a fringe this season? Forget sleek and subtle, the autumn/winter catwalks were awash with blunt, heavy fringes. Short, long, dark or light – this is one trend that suits all. Team with a nude lip and lots of kohl like Anna Sui or opt for a pared-down eye and statement lip like Krizia – the world's your oyster!
