Convenient Malaria Prevention with Prescriptions Direct

Prescriptions Direct makes it easier to get anti-malarial treatment

Published 14/05/2010

Boots Prescriptions Direct provides an opportunity to obtain effective anti-malarial treatment without a trip to the surgery.

Boots Prescriptions Direct allows eligible customers to access Malarone (atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride) through an online consultation.

It is important to note that no anti-malarial treatment is 100 percent effective, so you should also take steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. These steps can be found on www.BootsWebMD.com.

Which of the anti-malarials recommended is right for me?

Prescriptions Direct can only prescribe Malarone for malaria prevention. If the Fit for Travel website has recommended a choice of medicines, speak to your GP, pharmacist or travel clinic about which option will be best for you.

If you have been recommended Proguanil, Chloroquine or both then you will be able to purchase these from your local Boots Pharmacy subject to availability, or from Boots.com.

How does Malarone work?

Malarone prevents malaria by killing a certain type of malaria parasite. Some types of malaria become resistant to some anti-malarials, so it is important to check which anti-malarial is recommended each time you travel.

How do I take Malarone?

You will need to take one Malarone tablet once a day at the same time each day with food or a milky drink. You should start taking Malarone two days before travelling to an area affected by malaria, then continue whilst you are there and for another seven days after you return to a malaria-free location.

How effective is Malarone?

Malarone is most effective when the complete course of tablets is taken, as stopping early will put you at risk. No malaria prevention treatment can completely protect you, so it is very important that you also take steps to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.

Possible side effects

Malarone can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. Side effects are generally mild and include headaches, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Other possible side effects include coughing, mouth ulcers, dizziness and a rash.

Read more on the Patient Information Leaflet.

How much is the service?

The cost of Malarone will vary depending on the length of time you will be travelling. Below is the cost for 14 and 21-day trips to areas affected by malaria, but you may order exact quantities to meet your requirements.

Number of days of travel in malarial area Cost of Malarone
14 £79.98
21 £102.05

Is Malarone the only option?

Malarone is currently the only malaria prevention medicine available through Prescriptions Direct. If the Fit for Travel website has recommended a choice of medicines, speak to your GP, pharmacist or travel clinic about which option will be best for you.

You can also help to avoid being bitten by using:

  • Mosquito nets treated with insecticides
