Holiday Beauty: What the Experts Pack Stewart Long

Discover the beauty and grooming buys Boots' skin care expert Stewart Long will be packing for his summer holiday this year.

Favourite summer holiday destination

I like to get up into the high mountains where even in summer there is permanent snow, the sky is clear and blue and you are 12,000 feet above the day to day bustle. The Swiss Alps are on my list of favourite places.

Beauty/grooming products I won't leave without

A five-star UVA sun protection product of at least SPF 30 is my absolute priority. We all tend to head off to the sun and spend long periods outdoors when on holiday. Thanks to my role as skin care scientific adviser, I know the long term damage the sun can do, so Soltan is always my first choice. I always pack a Hackett Moisturising Shaving Cream. And I never go anywhere without Dental Floss!

Surviving the flight

For long haul flights, a rich moisturiser can be good as the dry air on a plane can leave skin feeling dry and uncomfortable. The advice when flying is to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and it's sensible to treat your skin to extra moisture too.

Boots Sun, Swim & Gym Water Resistant Protective Masque

Holiday hair must-haves

Personally, I use the same as at home but it's good advice to pack an intensive conditioner to prevent the sun and sea water drying out the hair and making it feel like straw. To reduce sun damage in the first place, use a product with sunscreens to protect hair when swimming (try Boots Sun, Swim & Gym Water Resistant Protective Masque).

My top holiday beauty tips

Soltan Hair & Scalp Spray SPF25
  1. Always use a high factor 5-star UVA sunscreen ? 90% of the visible signs of skin ageing that we see, such as wrinkles, age spots and saggy skin, are actually due to sun exposure. Avoid accelerating your skin ageing while on holiday and you'll look younger longer.

  2. Prepare four weeks prior to your holiday by using a firming, moisturising body product, possibly with a hint of fake tan, to ensure any newly exposed skin looks its best when you hit the beach. Exfoliate the body and prepare the skin like this and you'll feel more confident, plus your skin will look better during and after the holiday.

  3. Your hair can really suffer on holiday from sun and sea salt, leaving it frizzy and dry for weeks after. Protect it with sunscreen products (try Soltan Hair & Scalp Spray SPF25, and use an intensive conditioner twice a week while on holiday.
