Spring Clean Your Make Up Bag For S/S 2010

Keep it or ditch it? Give your make up bag a spring makeover with our expert tips on what to use and what to lose from your cosmetics stash this season.

Out with the old, in with the new. Our experts give us the lowdown on what make up is worth keeping for the coming S/S 2010 season, and what we should be packing away this spring.

From nail colours to eyeliner, we've canvassed the beauty professionals to find out what we should be making room for in our make up bags this spring and what we can retire for another season. Introducing what to use and what to lose for S/S 2010 – according to the experts who know.

USE it: skin-perfecting foundation

Max Factor Second Skin

DITCH: face powder with shimmer or sparkle

"This summer, skin is all about glow not gloss," says Max Factor make up artist Caroline Barnes. "Skin shouldn't look sparkly, it just needs to radiate health and not be 'make up evident'. I adore the finish that Max Factor Second Skin gives. It's so natural and instantly improves the look of your skin without looking heavily made up. Alternatively try mineral make up – it looks fresh and light on the skin and works in harmony with the skin itself."

USE it: coral lipgloss

Lancôme's Color Fever Gloss in B.B Sand

DITCH: matte lipstick

Spring is the time to pack away your matte lipstick, says Lancôme's National Make Up Artist, Benjamin Rousseau. "They were dominant last season, but as the temperatures soar, matt lipsticks can really make lips look dried out, which in turn can be quite ageing." Instead, go for a gloss – preferably in a coral shade. "Glosses are the ideal texture for spring and coral shades perfectly complement the natural, fresh effect that a gloss creates. Coral is going to be the big colour for S/S 2010 and it really creates a wow factor." Try Benjamin's new must-have: Lancôme's Color Fever Gloss in B.B Sand.

USE them: pastel nail shades

Revlon Nail Enamel

DITCH: neon colours

"Say bon voyage to your old hot 80s hues of 2009 and welcome the demure," says Revlon nail pro Andrea Fulerton. "Keep on trend with candy pastel shades, such as Revlon Nail Enamel in Minted, or Lilac Pastelle (available in store), which works as a neutral colour and can be worn by all ages."

USE them: barely-there bronzers

Ruby & Millie Complete Bronze Kit

DITCH: obvious, orange-toned bronzers

"For S/S 2010, bronzers and highlighters should be used in moderation to compliment the glow of your skin, but not take over the overall look," says Caroline Barnes. "Ditch heavy, orange toned bronzers and try to use a bronzer that's only one or two shades darker than you natural skin tone." Try Ruby & Millie Complete Bronze Kit.

USE them: bright coloured eyeliners

L'Oreal Paris Infallible Eye Liner

DITCH: iridescent eye make up shades

"If you don't have any bright coloured liners (blue, purple, green, orange, red) then invest in some," says Polly Osmond, National Make Up Artist for L'Oreal Paris, who suggests keeping your black eye pencils too (try L'Oreal Paris Infallible Eye Liner in black. "Keep colours strong and matt and put the iridescent back in the cupboard for now. Mixing bright colours with black can make them easily wearable." We like Urban Decay's colourful 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencils.
