Operation sunshine

Soak up our suncare advice and find the perfect SPF for you and yours

Confused about your UV...A, B, C? Think A for ageing, B for burning, and C for can't reach us (that's one less to think about!)

Soak it up

Soaking up sunlight can be blissful, especially when you're safe in the knowledge you've got the right sun care for your skin.

Save time in the suncare aisle by using our handy guide to finding the right Sun Protection Factor (SPF) for you and yours. The higher the SPF the greater the prote ction.

SPF Finder

The two big things to consider when choosing sun cream are:

Skin type: Whether your complexion is fair or dark, all skin types need at least SPF 15 protection from the sun.

Location, location, location: It doesn't have to be simmering hot before you reach for the sunscreen. The sun's rays can still reach us through clouds, particularly at high altitudes. So, whether you're in Blackpool or Barbados, you need to factor in sun protection.

Time for a new bottle?

Most sunscreens last two to three years but you can get an indication of whether it's expired by checking it smells okay and hasn't developed a dull, grainy or watery appearance. If you're still unsure, your best bet is a new bottle.

The perfect SPF for you is just two clicks away. Select your skin type, and tell us where in the world you are (or where you're going) and we'll do the rest.

What's your skin type?

Sensitive/Children;
Very Fair (Always burns, never tans);
Fair (Sometimes burns, tans minimally);
Medium (Sometimes burns, tans moderately);
Olive skin (Burns minimally, always tans);
Brown skin (Rarely burns); Black Skin (Rarely burns)

Find Your SPF

Please note: This recommendation is the minimum that should be used and is based on spending a "sensible" amount of time in the sun - that's up to a couple of hours. It also includes a 'margin of safety' compared to the National Protection Level calculation. Boots recommends using at least SPF 15 whenever you are in the sun but if in doubt, go for a higher SPF.

When applying your sun cream:

  • Apply a thick layer taking care not to miss any spots. Not sure how much sun lotion to use? Our suncare expert Clare O'Connor's tip is to use a blob the size of a two pound coin on each limb, chest, tummy, upper and lower back and not forgetting head and face
  • Put on your sun cream before your swimsuit, that way you won't miss the bits where your costume meets your skin!
  • Give yourself at least 15 minutes to let it dry before heading out
  • Reapply regularly, or after being in water

Remember to seek shade when the sun is strongest, between 11 am and 3pm in the UK, and wear a hat, sunglasses and clothes to protect you too.

5* rated suncare

Products with a five-star rating give you equal protection against both UVA and UVB damage. A lower rating means less protection against UVA rays. Every single suncare product in Boots Soltan and NO7 ranges is 5*-rated!
