Rosehip oil and Evening Primrose oils have been carefully chosen to help support the skins natural elasticity, both are rich in Omega oils & fatty acids. Research shows that massaging the perineal area from 34 weeks of pregnancy can help reduce the risk of episiotomy and tearing.
Perineal massage is the massaging of the perineum to prepare it to soften and stretch more easily during birth, reducing the risk of tearing or needing an episiotomy. This involves partial insertion of the thumbs into the opening of the vagina and sweeping the perineum. The perineum is the area of skin and underlying muscles between the vagina and the anus. This area naturally stretches to accommodate your baby as they are being born. Often the natural stretching in this area can result in tears and sometimes if the skin is unable to stretch enough you may need to be given a small cut (episiotomy) to create the room needed. * (full instruction leaflet enclosed)

How to use
What is Perineal Massage?
The perineum is the bit of skin between the vagina and the anus. The perineum naturally stretches to accommodate your baby’s head when baby is ready to be born. (Often referred to as crowning) If this is your first baby, or you have had an episiotomy (cut) before, or are looking for a vaginal birth after a previous section then research* shows that perineal massage can reduce the risk of tearing or needing an episiotomy in labour.
Who can massage this area?
You or your partner can massage the perineum. It can simply be used as part of love making or if you do not feel comfortable with this you can easily perform this alone.
When do I start massaging?
Evidence suggests that massaging from around 34 weeks is very beneficial. Daily massaging is recommended or at least 5 times a week and for around 5 minutes each time.
How do I massage correctly?
Ensure you wash your hands before performing perineal massage. Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. A mirror may be helpful for you to visualise the area before you begin. It can be a good idea to make this a routine following your daily shower/bath. The warmth of the water will help with the blood supply and surrounding tissues to this area. Positioning can be how you feel you’re most comfortable; semi –sitting, one foot up on the toilet, bath or stool, squatting against a wall.
1. Place 1-2 drops of“Down Below” massage oil onto your fingers and apply to the outside of your perineum. Place your thumbs about 2 inches (5 cm] into your vagina.
2.Using your thumbs press downwards in the direction of your anus so that you can feel the stretch of the muscles surrounding the vagina and the vaginal tissues. Once you have this downward pressure, use your thumbs to sweep from side to side in a rhythmic“U”shape/hammock movement. Whilst massaging the perineum from the outside with your other fingers. When massaging, apply steady pressure towards the anus. This may tingle, but should not hurt! This will also help you to recognise the sensation when your baby is ready to be born.
3. Apply more oil to the outside of the perineum if required.
4. The perineum will possibly feel tight when you first start, but in time you will begin to feel a change and remember this should not hurt!
5. If your partner is performing the massage, just follow the same instructions but ask them to use their index fingers using the same “U” shape/ hammock motion. It is important to tell your partner how much pressure to apply.
6. Do not perform massage if you are suffering from Herpes, Vaginal thrush or other known infections. Please contact your midwife or GP if you suspect any of these infections.
