What is the Boots Period Delay Clinic for?

Having your period can sometimes be inconvenient, for example if you’re on holiday or taking exams, or if it’s a special occasion like your wedding.

This clinic can give you access to prescription-only treatment called Utovlan which will delay your period until you stop taking it.

If you already have a prescription from your GP we can dispense it, either at your local Boots pharmacy, or via our online prescription service.

Who can use this clinic?

To use this clinic, you must be female, aged 16 to 54 and not using the contraceptive pill, or any other hormonal contraception.*

The average age of menopause is 49 and most women will have stopped menstruating by age 54. If you are 55 or over and want to delay your periods, we recommend you speak to your GP.

Utovlan works in a similar way to the hormone progesterone, which occurs naturally in the body. It delays your period until you stop taking the tablets.

Side effects

Utovlan can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The side effects include nausea and skin problems. If you suffer from epilepsy, migraines, asthma, heart or kidney problems, you may find your symptoms are worse while taking Utovlan.

Utovlan can also increase the risk of developing blood clots. This risk may be further increased when taking a long journey, or flying. Taking regular breaks to move around during long journeys may help prevent blood clots.

Try the following steps to help reduce the risk of developing blood clots during flights:

  • Do exercises such as raising your heels while your toes are still on the floor, then raising your toes while your heels are still on the floor. Do these every half hour or more
  • Consider buying compression socks. Your Boots pharmacist can help you choose ones which fit properly
  • Store luggage away so you have enough room to stretch your legs
  • Walk when you can
  • Drink water
  • Avoid alcohol
  • Avoid sleeping tablets

If you’re worried about blood clots, please speak to your GP for further help.

For full information about Utovlan, please read the Patient Information Leaflet.

Utovlan is the only period delay treatment you can get through Boots Period Delay Online Clinic. Please speak to your GP if you want to know about other options for delaying your period, or if you’re currently taking the contraceptive pill. If you are 55 or over and want to delay your periods, we recommend you speak to your GP.
