From by-product to Wonder Jelly, the story of Vaseline is anything but ordinary....
It all began in 1859 when a 22 year-old chemist named Robert A. Chesebrough went to Pennsylvania to investigate an oil well, where he thought he‘d make his fortune as an oil prospector. Instead Chesebrough discovered a gooey substance known as Rod Wax that was the by-product of the refinery process. Local oil workers would use Rod Wax to aid the healing of their cuts and burns.
Chesebrough‘s curiosity led him to take some Rod Wax home. After years of experimentation, he managed to develop a unique distillation and purification process. Vaseline Petroleum Jelly was born.
By 1870 Chesebrough had hit the road with this unique Petroleum Jelly. Travelling across the state of New York by horse & cart, he would demonstrate his miracle product on himself! Burning his skin with acid or an open flame and then spreading the clear jelly on his injury in front of an astounded audience.
In 1872 Chesebrough registered the brand name ‘Vaseline‘ as a trademark for his Wonder Jelly.
Soon Petroleum Jelly‘s popularity spread from continent to continent, along with its many different uses. From nappy rash and chapped skin, to being used by US soldiers as a bartering tool with British soldiers during the First World War, Vaseline became a bathroom cupboard staple.
The rest, as they say, is history...
