Thrush symptoms and treatment

Discover the Canesten range of thrush and athlete's foot products and read advice about spotting the symptoms of thrush

Thrush is a very common infection, which is caused by a yeast called Candida albicans. This normally lives in the gut and in some women it also exists in the vagina, without causing any problems. However, if the conditions in the vagina change, making it possible for Candida to multiply this is when thrush occurs. 75% of women will probably experience thrush at least once in their lifetime and, for some women, they will suffer from thrush on more than one occasion.

What are the symptoms of thrush?

There are some common symptoms that will help you to identify if you may be suffering from thrush. Usually there is nothing to be concerned about, however if you haven't had it before and think you might be experiencing it for the first time, you should go to your doctor.

You should look out for the following symptoms, which are often a sign of thrush:

  • The first and most obvious symptom of thrush is often discomfort in the vaginal area. If you are itchy, sore or swollen around the entrance to your vagina, then you may be experiencing thrush
  • The next sign, which not all women notice at first, is a thick, white, creamy discharge, which is usually odourless
  • Other symptoms you may experience include pain or a burning sensation

Remember that a Canesten combination product can help to treat both the internal infection and the external itch.

There are also some other common triggers for thrush which you should be aware of, for example:

  • If you have been on a course of antibiotics you might experience thrush when you finish taking them because they can kill off healthy bacteria which help maintain the environment in the vagina
  • The normal hormonal changes that women experience with having periods and being pregnant can upset the natural balance of the vagina and lead to thrush

If you suffer from thrush from time to time and can recognise the symptoms it will make it easier for you to treat the condition.

If you start suffering from regular, recurrent attacks of thrush you could speak to your doctor.

Canesten treatments to help thrush

There are four combination products from Canesten to help women deal with the symptoms of thrush. These are suitable for women who have previously been diagnosed with thrush and include:

  • Canesten Combi Pessary and Cream (Clotrimazole) For those who want a familiar and convenient preparation, this includes the internal vaginal pessary to treat the internal infection and a tube of thrush cream to help relieve the external symptoms. It is suitable for women aged 16 to 60

  • Canesten Soft Gel Pessary Combi (Clotrimazole) For those who are looking for a soft gel format. It contains a comfortable internal soft gel pessary and an external cream to treat both the internal and external symptoms of thrush. This is suitable for women aged 16 to 60

  • Canesten Cream Combi (Clotrimazole) For those who are less experienced or those who prefer a cream based treatment rather than a pessary. This product contains a pre-filled cream applicator to treat the internal infection and an external cream to relieve the irritating itch. It is suitable for women aged 16 to 60

  • Canesten Oral & Cream Duo (Clotrimazole & Fluconazole) is a convenient treatment for those seeking a discreet option that contains an oral capsule, which helps to treat the cause of thrush, as well as soothing external cream to help relieve itchiness and soreness. It can be used by women and men aged 16 and over . Do not use Canesten Oral & Cream Duo if you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding.

There are lots of other products in the Canesten range to help relieve and clear thrush. Always read the label.

Remember that to help prevent thrush try to maintain a healthy lifestyle as this can reduce your susceptibility to thrush. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can all help to keep your body in balance.
