You know his angelic fragrance, but before Thierry Mugler introduced the world to his delicious popular scent, Angel, he was an ambitious teen with an endless imagination.

A star is born

Born in Strasbourg, France, Mugler spent his childhood daydreaming in front of the towers of the cathedral, before joining the ballet at the age of 14. It was here that Mugler found himself in the world of his dreams – the theatrical fantasy world of the stage. By working closely with the costumiers and dancers, Mugler began to find the vision that would soon become his future.

All the worlds a stage

At 20, Mugler moved to Paris where his career in fashion design began, as a freelance stylist for various ready-to-wear fashion houses. In 1974 he started his own label and the Thierry Mugler brand was born.

For the next 20 years, his fashion shows became full theatrical productions with an endless celebrity guest list, drawing crowds worthy of rock concerts.



The sweet smell of success

In 1987, after a suggestion from colleague and fellow designer Helmut Newton, Mugler dabbled in photography, publishing several books featuring his work.

But it was his business venture in 1988 – a partnership with Clarins – that made famous the Thierry Mugler name. Angel, the captivating scent that kicked off the oriental gourmand fragrances, was born.

Angel: heaven scent

Mugler's creations leave an unforgettable impression on the wearer and the eyes of the beholder, a reaction he intended for his signature fragrance.

'It says who you are when you leave or enter a room,' Mugler says. 'A fragrance is like an aura around you, like an angel whispering in your ears.'
