From sweet potatoes and pink fish macaroni to blueberry pancakes and bread and butter pudding, celebrity chef Lesley Waters and SMA take you through their top six quick-and-easy toddler recipes.







Sweet potato broth

This home made soup is ideal for dunking bread.

Suitable for children from 12 months old

Ingredients for two servings

  • 4tsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 225g sweet potato, peeled and diced
  • 250ml whole cow's milk or your usual baby milk made up
  • 250ml vegetable stock (look out for low-salt stock)
  • Chunks of fresh bread


How to make it

  1. Heat the 4tsp of olive oil in a pan and gently fry the onion for about five minutes.
  2. Add the sweet potato, stir in the milk, stock (look out for low-salt stock) and bring to the boil. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes.
  3. Place the broth into a liquidiser and whizz until smooth.
  4. Divide broth into two bowls and serve with pieces of your toddler's favourite fresh chunky bread.

Broccoli and cheese one pot risotto

Risotto rice, such as arborio or carnaroli, will give the best, creamy texture for this risotto.

Suitable for children from 12 months old

Ingredients for two servings

  • 7g unsalted butter
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 55g risotto rice
  • 55g small broccoli florets
  • 300ml whole cow's milk or your usual baby milk made up
  • 300ml chicken stock (look out for low-salt stock)
  • 55g frozen petit pois
  • 55g cooked boneless, skinless chicken breast, finely diced
  • 25g mature cheddar


How to make it

  1. Heat the unsalted butter in a pan and cook the onion over a medium heat for five minutes until softened.
  2. Stir in the rice and broccoli and cook for a further minute.
  3. Mix the milk and stock (look out for low-salt stock) together and add a third to the pan. Simmer rapidly for five minutes, stirring occasionally. Add another third of liquid and cook for a further five minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the final third of liquid and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally until the rice is soft and tender and the liquid has been absorbed.
  4. Stir in the petit pois and chicken and heat through thoroughly.
  5. Stir in cheese and serve.

Scout's favourite pink fish macaroni

Pasta is a firm favourite among little ones, and the serving of salmon means you can work some healthy fish into their diet too.

Suitable for children from 12 months old

Ingredients for two servings

  • 25g unsalted butter
  • 25g plain flour
  • 400ml whole cow's milk or your usual baby milk made up
  • 55g small broccoli florets
  • 140g boneless, skinless salmon fillet, diced finely
  • 55g macaroni pasta, cooked
  • 25g mature cheddar


How to make it

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 190°C, 375°F, gas mark 5.
  2. Place the unsalted butter, flour and milk in a medium pan. Whisk over a medium heat until the sauce starts to thicken. Reduce the heat and simmer gently for two minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add broccoli to the sauce and cook for three minutes.
  4. Stir in the salmon and cook for a further minute.
  5. Gently stir in the cooked macaroni and 2/3 of the cheese. Pour into an ovenproof dish.
  6. Mix together the remaining cheese and breadcrumbs and scatter over the top.
  7. Bake for 15-20 minutes until bubbling and golden.

Apricot and custard bake

This sweet, fruit-flavoured pudding is delicious with fresh apricots or try plums, nectarines or peaches when in season. If using canned fruit, use fruit in natural juice.

Ingredients for two servings

  • 40g plain flour
  • 1 medium egg, beaten
  • 150ml made-up SMA Toddler Milk
  • Knob of unsalted butter
  • 4 ripe apricots, halved, stoned and each cut into quarters, or 10 canned, drained apricots in natural juice


How to make it

You will need two ovenproof dishes/ramekins that are 10cm in diameter and hold 200ml liquid.

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C, 400°F, gas mark 6.
  2. Sieve the flour into a bowl and make a well in the centre.
  3. Add the egg to the centre well and gradually whisk in the flour. Then gradually whisk in the SMA Toddler Milk until the batter is smooth.
  4. Place a small knob of unsalted butter in each dish and place in the oven for two minutes or until melted and hot. Carefully swirl around the dish.
  5. Divide the apricots evenly between each dish, then pour in batter.
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until puffed and golden. Dust with icing sugar and serve with custard.

Savoury bread and butter pudding

It won't just be the toddlers in the family who'll love this tempting pud.

Suitable for children from 12 months old

Ingredients for two servings

  • 85g baguette, torn into bite size pieces
  • 115g cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 2 slices/80g lean ham, shredded
  • 30g mature cheddar, grated
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 200ml whole cow's milk or your usual baby milk made up


How to make it

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C, 375°F, gas mark 5.
  2. Divide the baguette, tomatoes and ham between two shallow, ovenproof dishes. Scatter over half the cheese.
  3. Beat the eggs and milk together and pour half the mixture into each dish.
  4. Scatter over the remaining cheese.
  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until puffed and golden.
  6. Serve with a stir-fry of thinly-sliced carrots and courgettes or your favourite vegetables.

Banana and blueberry pancakes

These fruity pancakes are great at any time of day – breakfast, lunch, big treat snack or pudding. This recipe is only suitable for babies over 12 months.

Ingredients for two servings

  • 55g self-raising flour
  • 1 medium egg, beaten
  • 90ml made-up SMA Toddler Milk
  • 1 small banana, chopped small
  • 55g blueberries
  • 2tsp sunflower oil
  • Runny honey to serve


How to make it

  1. Sieve the flour into a bowl and make a well in the centre.
  2. Pour the egg and SMA Toddler Milk into the centre and gradually whisk together with the flour until batter is smooth. Stir in the banana and blueberries.
  3. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan, tilt the pan to coat all over with oil.
  4. Spoon in the batter to make four even-sized pancakes. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the underside is firm and golden. Flip over and cook for a further 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Serve warm with a drizzle of runny honey and thick yoghurt.
