Whilst this product is made under strict hygienic conditions, it is not sterile. Failure to follow instructions on preparation and storage may make your baby ill. Wash hands well. Sterilise all utensils according to manufacturers' instructions. Boil kettle filled with fresh tap water. Allow boiled water to cool for no more than 30 minutes before measuring the required amount of water (see feeding guide) into the sterilised bottled, carefully - the water is hot. Do not use artificially softened water or repeatedly boiled water. Using the scoop provided in this can, add the correct number of scoops of powder (see feeding guide), levelling off each scoop with the back of a clean dry knife. Replace plastic lid on can. Place the sterilised teat and cap on the bottle and shake well. Cool bottle under cold running water until lukewarm. Test temperature by shaking a few drops onto the inside of your wrist. If advance preparation is necessary, consult your healthcare professional.
Do not add extra powder or water to make feeds stronger or weaker and do not press powder into scoop. Using too much or too little powder could make baby ill. We recommend preparing each feed in individual bottles when required. Throw away feeds that have not been used within 2 hours. For older babies, made-up SMA LF can be added to food and used in cooking. Do not warm feeds in a microwave oven as this may cause uneven heating and could scald your baby's mouth. Never add any food to the milk in your baby's bottle.
Breast milk is best for babies. This product must be used under medical supervision. SMA LF is a lactose free milk based formula for the dietary management of infants and young children who are intolerant to lactose or sucrose, or who are suffering from symptoms such as diarrhoea, tummy ache or wind caused by temporary lactose intolerance. It is suitable as the sole source of nutrition for infants up to six months of age, and in conjunction with solid food, for infants and young children up to eighteen months of age. Professional advice must be followed on the need for and proper use of formulae and on all matters of infant feeding. SMA LF is not suitable for those who are allergic to cows' milk protein, or who suffer from galactosaemia or require a galactose free diet.
Good dental hygiene is as important for babies and toddlers as it is for older children and adults. Prolonged or frequent contact of drinks or feeds with the teeth, e.g. from using bottles or beakers as comforters, increases the risk of tooth decay. Use a cup or beaker by 6 months if possible, and in any case as soon as the first tooth appears. In accordance with normal dental hygiene, your baby's teeth should be cleaned after the last feed at night. Ask your healthcare professional or dentist for advice. Never leave your baby alone during feeding.
