Boots online treatment to delay your period

There is a medicine that can delay your period, so whatever the reason, we can help you delay your period with a prescription treatment, available online.

An online consultation can see if the treatment is suitable for you, and if so, we can arrange for you to receive a prescription treatment without going to your doctor (subject to stock availability).

If you already have a prescription from your doctor we can dispense it, either at your local Boots pharmacy, or via our online prescription service .

Period delay: More about the online prescription treatment

The prescription treatment is called Utovlan. The brand for period delay has recently changed to Utovlan, which contains the same active ingredient as the previous product and delays your period until you stop taking the tablets. Utovlan is not suitable for everyone, but we can assess if it is right for you.

Delaying your period cycle: I want some more information

If you want to delay your period you might like to read some more information first about the prescription treatment that is available called Utovlan. We hope these questions and answers give you some useful information to help you decide if Utovlan could be suitable for you.

How does Utovlan work?

Utovlan works in a similar way to the hormone progesterone, which occurs naturally in the body. It delays your period until the tablets are stopped. You will need to take one Utovlan tablet three times a day, starting three days before your period is due to start and continuing for no more than 14 days afterwards (17 days in total). Your period will be delayed while you are taking the tablets and should start within three days of stopping the tablets.

Is Utovlan suitable for everyone?

Utovlan is not suitable for all women. You must be aged 16 or over and not taking the contraceptive pill or using hormonal contraception.

Period delay: Are there any side effects?

Utovlan can cause side effects, although not everyone will experience them. The side effects are rare and include nausea and skin problems. If you suffer from epilepsy, migraines, heart or kidney problems, you may find your symptoms are worse while taking Utovlan.

Utovlan can also increase the risk of developing blood clots. This risk may be further increased when taking a long journey, or flying for about eight hours or more. Taking regular breaks during long journeys may help prevent blood clots.

Try the following steps to help reduce the risk of developing blood clots during flights:

  • Do exercises such as raising your heels while your toes are still on the floor, then raising your toes while your heels are still on the floor. Do these every half hour or more
  • Consider buying compression socks. Your Boots pharmacist can help you choose ones which fit properly
  • Store luggage away so you have enough room to stretch your legs
  • Walk when you can
  • Drink water
  • Avoid alcohol and sleeping tablets

If you're worried about blood clots, please speak to your GP for further help.

Period delay: Is Utovlan the only option?

Utovlan is the only treatment for period management that you can get via this clinic from Boots. We recommend you speak to your doctor if you want to know about other options for managing your period, or if you are currently taking the contraceptive pill.

If you would like any more information about Utovlan or about delaying your period, please remember that a Boots pharmacist will always be happy to give you any advice and support you need.
