We went backstage at Julien Macdonald’s S/S 09 show to get the latest look straight from the catwalk. The news? Simple, stylish and down-to-earth elegance.

Ethereal Elegance

The make-up at Julien Macdonald’s S/S 09 show was simple, modern and fresh. “We wanted to do something super natural this season,” says international make-up artist for L’Oreal Paris, James Kaliardos. “We wanted to make it look more ‘honest’, like the way a girl would do her make up - as opposed to the way a make-up artist would do it.” James recommends applying a good moisturiser before you start on your make-up. “You should always put moisturiser on first as it changes the consistency of the skin,” says James. Let the moisturiser sink into your skin for a couple of minutes and then begin by applying your base.

Step One: Conceal and Prepare

This look is all about enhancement. “We are hitting all the areas of the face in a natural way - it’s about perfecting what’s already there and presenting your face the way it is,” says James, who applied L'Oreal True match Minerals Foundation to the models by sweeping the brush gently over their entire face, followed by L’Oreal Minerals Concealer (coming soon to under their eyes.

Step Two: The Dreamy Flush

A healthy flush is all you need to achieve this look. Using circular motions, sweep L’Oreal Glow Minerals in Rose Eclat (coming soon to onto the apples of your cheeks, moving up very lightly toward your temples.

Step Three: Dress Eyes and Highlight

The key is not to make a feature out of any part of your face in particular, but highlight everything in equal measure. For the eyes, James swept L’Oreal Color Appeal in ‘Beige Crystal’ (coming soon to all over the lid to contour the eyes and then ‘Desert Shimmer’ over the brow bone. James also recommends putting a little bit on the nose and cheekbones. As this look is all about highlighting your natural features, dab a little L’Oreal Color Appeal in ‘Pearly White’ (coming soon to in the corner of your eye with your little finger to brighten and add extra sparkle. Lastly, don’t forget your brows. James recommends brushing the eyebrows up. “It makes such a difference,” he says.

Step Four: Lightly Define Lashes

Lashes must be curled for this look as it helps to open up your eyes. Curl for no more than 3 seconds each side, then apply L’Oreal Extra Volume Collagene Mascara. “This is a really nice plumping mascara with a fat brush,” says James, who started at the root of the lash and brought the mascara lightly out to the ends.

Step Five: Give Lips a Natural Gleam

Lips are soft, dewy but above all, natural.  James used L'Oreal Rouge Infallible Lipstick in Always Toasted for lighter skin and Unlimited Brown for darker skin.  “Apply the colour, wait 30 seconds then apply the gloss over the lips. This is great because it stays on for up to 16 hours and nothing comes off on the gloss when you apply it over the lipstick,” says James.

The Finishing Touch

Finish by dusting a light layer of L’Oreal Mattifying Minerals (coming soon to all over the face to perfect the look. Think dewy and youthful, but not too shiny. “I don’t believe in putting highlighter all over the face – just where it’s needed,” says James. Using a powder will eliminate any unwanted shine.

Hair Heaven

Hair was kept fuss-free this season. Think early nineties Kate Moss.  “The look is not overly groomed – hair should be early, fresh, young and effortless,” says backstage hair stylist, Sam Hillerby. “Twist hair, put in a bun and wrap around itself whilst you dry it. This gives it a little more movement. Don’t style the hair, it’s all about the products that you use such as serums, conditioners and creams.” Sam recommends washing your hair and applying L’Oreal Elvive Re-Nutrition Nourishing Day Fluid (coming soon to after towel drying. “Dry, brush hair back off the shoulders and tuck behind your ears,” she says. “After this, lightly dust the hair with L'Oreal Elnett Supreme Hold Hairspray – simple.”
