As one half of hugely successful beauty brand Ruby and Millie, internationally acclaimed make up artist Ruby Hammer has worked on photo shoots for magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Red, Harpers & Queen, Marie Claire and Italian Vogue and is regularly quoted in magazines and on the television as an expert on trends, beauty tips and advice.

In 2007, Ruby was awarded an MBE for her contribution to the cosmetic industry. Here she tells us what's really in her make-up bag...

1. What is your favourite ever beauty tip?

You have to use mascara!  You can’t finish a face and look without mascara. I’m also a firm believer in a good night’s sleep.  It does wonders for your skin.

2. What 3 products could you not live without?

It would have to be concealer, mascara, and all hydrating products, such as body lotions, lip balm, hand cream as I have very dry skin.

3. What is your biggest beauty disaster?

My biggest beauty disaster was when I over plucked my eyebrows when I was 14. I gave my parents quite a shock when they found me as I had removed almost all the hair.  I also am afraid to say that I subconsciously pick spots.  This is particularly bad as my skin is dark, it leaves dark black marks which take months to clear or even scar.

4. Describe your look 10 years ago

I have always been a naturally thin person, but 10 years ago, I was in the middle of a divorce and this took a toll on my body, dropping to less than 7 stone, which at 5"5 is dangerous.  This was the saddest time in my life and I can honestly say I looked terrible.  It was very clear to me how a physical and emotional trauma can take its toll on your looks.

5. What has been your career highlight so far?

My career highlight was last year in 2007 when Millie Kendall and I were awarded MBE's by the queen.  It was a very exciting day and one of the proudest moments of my career.

6. What's in your make-up bag?

Lots and lots of products!  I’ve got eyelash curlers, Ruby & Millie Face Glosses and lip-glosses, Cotton Wool Buds, An Eyebrow brush, powder and Ruby & Millie Eyeliners in Black, Brown and Grey.

7. What is your favourite celebrity look / which celeb do you think has the best make-up?

I think Angelina Jolie has beautiful makeup.  She has a signature look which she sticks too, occasionally adding eyeliner and eye makeup for a more dramatic look for red carpets or special events. Whether she ís pregnant or not, casual or formal, she always looks radiant.

9. What do you do to relax?

My work schedule is usually so hectic, going from shoot to shoot and traveling lots, so to relax I like to do as little as possible. I like to watch films or read a book or chill out reading magazines.
