Gorgeous products are only half the story when it comes to achieving perfectly polished make-up. Beauty guru Ruby Hammer shares her must-have tools of the trade for an expertly applied finish.

  • "The best way to ensure lipstick is applied evenly and precisely is to use a Lip Brush," says Ruby, whose make-up brushes are one of the most popular products in the range. Use the brush to build up the lipstick in layers and it will have much more 'staying power'.
Boots Recommends: Ruby & Millie Lip Brush.

  • "A Cheek Brush will ensure you don’t use too much and it is placed correctly," says Ruby. This can also double up as a powder brush for a quick sweep to set your make-up.
Boots Recommends: Mister Mascara slant tweezer and mini.

  • "Use an angled brush for applying eyeliner and grooming the brows," recommends Ruby. Pluck your brows first, then use the brush to fill in any gaps using an eyebrow shadow.
Boots Recommends: BeneFit Hard Angled Brow Brush.

  • Slanted tweezers are the best to use, as they grasp the hairs much better. Remember never pluck above the brow, only below. "Tweezers are a must have and I always have a pair on me," Ruby states.
Boots Recommends: Mister Mascara slant tweezer and mini.

  • "Eyelash Curlers are a sure way to open up the eye," says Ruby. A few seconds on each lash is all you need with good eyelash curlers. Curl, then apply mascara for a wide-eyed, show-stopping look.

  • Boots Recommends: Ruby & Millie I-Lash Curlers.

  • Versatile and cheap, cotton buds are your saviour for when you have those tiny make-up mishaps that need correcting. "Cotton Buds are great for makeup touch-ups and removing excess lipstick," says Ruby.
    Boots Recommends: Boots Cotton Buds.

  • "2 face brushes – use one small and one larger for applying blusher to the cheeks and contouring," recommends Ruby. Use bronzer to contour your cheekbones with the first brush then add a flush of colour to the apples with the larger brush.
Boots Recommends: Ruby & Millie Cheek Brush and No.7 Directional Powder Brush.

  • Eye drops are brilliant for when you are feeling tired, hungover or have been staring at your computer screen for too long.  "Eye Drops are great to brighten the whites of the eyes for a healthy look," says Ruby.
Boots Recommends: Boots Sparkling Eye Drops.
