Beauty Rules: Oils

From face to hair, body to bathing, right now it's all about the power of oil so chuck out your old beauty routine and get on board with this year's beauty phenomenon - oils.

From face to hair, body to bathing, right now it’s all about the power of oil.

The secret’s out: oils are big news in beauty. The surprise? They work wonders on all skin types. Here’s why you can benefit from oiling up – whatever your skin type.

Facial Oils: The wonder workers

Imagine facial oils to be pore-clogging, grease-giving products for dry skin only? Think again. “Oils are misunderstood,” says Urban Retreat skincare guru Anastasia Achilleos, who uses oils daily on her own skin and her clients’. “People believe they clog skin and worsen oily skin, but good quality oils can help improve the texture and firmness of the skin, help reach the areas a cream cannot reach and improve hydration. They can be anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory, so blemish-prone clients shouldn’t be afraid of them. Plus oil on oil works, so oily skin can use them in the evening to balance the skin.”

Body Oils: The super nourishers

Worried about greasy limbs? Don’t be. “A good body oil will contain the right type of oils that nicely blend in with the skin’s own lipids. It is as if your skin is "drinking up" the oil and leaves your skin feeling extra soft, smooth and supple without a greasy after-feel,” explains Lieve de Clerq of Origins, whose Origins Calm To Your Sense Lavender and Vanilla oil contains organic jojoba oil, known to mimic the oils in the skin, for a non-greasy result. As with facial oils, good quality body oils offer benefits some creams can’t. “Creams can often lie very close to the surface, whereas good quality oils can help the deeper tissue to absorb all the nutrients available and can improve hydration to the skin,” explains Anastasia.

Hair Oils: the damage specialists

Perfect for hair in need of nourishment, hair oils make a great overnight treatment. “When the hair is dry or damaged from exposure to the sun or from frequent heat-styling, oils that are suitable for hair help to nourish and rejuvenate,” explains Lieve.

“For the Origins Organics collection we have developed a Conditioning Hair Oil with Organic Sesame Seed oil, Organic Sunflower oil and Organic Olive oil. These oils are naturally rich in vitamins which are known to protect against environmental damage.”
