With a lengthy career spanning three decades Sam McKnight has always been at the forefront of session hair styling. In 1978, Sam worked on his first Vogue shoot. He has since collaborated on hundreds of Vogue covers and stories, featuring in almost every international edition.

Celebrities are always top of Sam’s client list and he has been behind some of their most recognisable images in recent history. They have included Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Kylie Minogue, Madonna, Elizabeth Hurley, Uma Thurman, Sienna Miller, Agyness Deyn and Drew Barrymore. The most famous being the late Princess Diana, whom he regularly accompanied, and whose hair he styled for her most iconic images, from 1990 to 1997.

1. What is your favourite ever hair tip?

I like to do a final rinse in mineral water as opposed to tap water; as tap water can have a higher PH level which means that hair cuticle cells swell and lift, leaving the hair with a rough, dull texture. Using mineral water which can have a lower PH level is less damaging and will leave hair shiny and thick (and is also good for your skin).

2. What 3 products could you not live without?

Pantene Pro-V Ice Shine Serum as it provides a glistening shine to even very dull hair;  Pantene Pro-V Classic Care hair spray is a good old rounder that washes out and Batiste Dry Shampoo as it gently refreshes hair when you do not have time to cleanse with water.

3. What was your biggest hair disaster?

Going bald!

4. What has been your career highlight so far?

I have had many, but I would say having the opportunity to work with the most beautiful women in the world.

5. What hair colour / style is in trend for Autum Winter 08

The A/W 08 hair colours will be strong marmalade and caramel blondes to red. For brunettes it will be chocolate and a blue/black goth hollywood inspired style. Inspiration will be drawn from many eras; a mixed retro /glam for 1920s - 1980s - taking eclectic hints from all; through to the 1970's studio 54 and 1920's style bobs.

6. What is your favourite celebrity look/ which celeb do you think has the best hair?

Grace Kelly exudes style, sophsitcation and timeless elegance.

7. If you weren't in the hair industry, what would you be doing?

I have had many jobs, and actually used to be teacher so who knows….

8. What's the worst hair myth you have ever heard and want to put straight?

Believe me I have heard many in my time! The one in particular about not shampooing, as your hair naturally cleanses itself… this is fine if you are a caveman but not in 21st century!

9. What is your opinion on natural and organic products?

I think that the future is definitely looking organic with more products appearing in the market and less wasteful packaging.
