Bobs and crops have dominated hair news for months, but long hair is staging a comeback.

Summer was all about the crop, but now long hair is back! Ok, so it never really went away and the new crops are pretty hot, but right now we’re loving the long, tousled, effortless-cool, just-out-of-bed hair the models at Gucci were rocking. Why do we like it? It looks a treat when teamed with autumn’s dark kohl eyes and it works brilliantly on straight, wavy and moderately curly hair. So, arm yourself with mousse (try Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek Mousse, or Perfect Curls Mousse if your hair is wavy) and a pair of large curling tongs and heed these rules for rocking hot locks.

  • Ditch the side-swept do. It’s all about the centre-part for this look.
  • Keep hair healthy and conditioned – think tousled and bed-head, not tired and tangled.
  • Start by working a peach-sized ball of mousse through damp hair. “The mousse will add shine and texture,” says Pantene Global Ambassador and hair guru Sam McKnight.
  • Straight hair? Blow-dry your hair as normal then grab your large curling tongs. Your aim for this look is laidback waves rather than perfect curls. “Wrap random sections of hair loosely around the tongs, working across the head in different directions,” says Sam.
  • Naturally curly hair? For a subtler, laidback wave, start from scratch and blow-dry your hair straight, says Sam. “You can then use the tongs to create casual waves,” as before.
  • Below-chin to shoulder-skimming hair? You can work the look too. Just go easy on the wave and keep it gentle if your hair is thick.
  • For the ultimate rock-chick finish, gently define layers and ends with Pantene Enhanced Layers Whipped Wax. Using fingers, rake a pea-sized amount through the lengths and ends of dry hair. (N.B don’t use regular wax; this one’s been created especially for long, layered hair!)
  • Accessorize with sooty black mascara and black kohl eyes. Rock on!
