Pillar-box red and rich scarlet pouts suit everyone and were all the rage on the autumn/winter catwalks in 2008. To make this style wearable, ‘drench lips in a bold colour but keep the rest of your make-up neutral’, says celebrity make-up artist Chase Aston.

Want to be even more on trend? Choose a matt lip shade instead of a gloss. This is a womanly and classic take on the über-glossy textures we’ve seen in the past. ‘Application is key,’ says Chase. ‘Use a lip liner to stencil your lips before filling in with colour.’ This will lock the lipstick in place and stop it from bleeding.

How to get perfect matt red lips

  1. Your lips are the focus of this look, so get them in shape with a lip conditioner such as Blistex Daily Lip Conditioner.
  2. To keep your colour in place, line your lips with a lipliner. Try Revlon Colorstay Lipliner in Red.
  3. Paint the colour onto your top and bottom lips and then blot with a tissue.
  4. Now re-apply more carefully with a lip brush, such as No7 Retractable Lip Brush, paying special attention to the the outside line of your lips, the corners of your mouth and the cupid's bow.

A soft blush
Bashful corals and sunny apricot shades instantly give a dull complexion a boost and flatter all skintones. Apply colour underneath your cheekbones and blend with fingers.

The new peroxide blonde
The whiter-than-white shade is this season’s latest hair colour trend. Think
head-turning, old-school glamour.

The wave revival
If peroxide blonde doesn't suit you, nothing finishes off a look better than a polished hairstyle. Tousled and bouncy curls balance glamorous make-up and cinch-waisted clothing. Prefer your hair up? Backcomb the crown before twisting and securing in a high chignon, letting wisps fall sexily over your face.
