Banish super-sized lines and shake off that grey winter pallor with our sneaky winter skin survival guide.

Can't quite put your finger on why your skin looks a little shabby, your wrinkles seemed to have expanded overnight and your complexion's as grey as the winter sky? Welcome to the winter weather effect. Here's what your winter-weary skin may be experiencing... and what you can do about it.

Winter skin glitch one: super-sized lines and wrinkles

Noticed your lines and wrinkles are suddenly more pronounced? "Dehydration is the number one cause," reassures Bliss and Soap & Glory founder, Marcia Kilgore. "When your skin is dehydrated, the cells appear less plump." The culprits: central heating, low moisture levels, wind and cold weather. Thankfully the solution is quick and simple: rehydrate skin with a good moisturiser (try Origins A Perfect World Antioxidant Moisturiser or Origins A Perfect World Antioxidant Moisturiser or Soap & Glory Catch A Wrinkle In Time day moisturiser ) and up your water intake. For a double-whammy, try using a skin care product designed to help minimise the appearance of lines and wrinkles, like Soap & Glory Wizard of Flaws or Soap & Glory Wizard of Flaws or Tri-Aktaline Deep Wrinkle Filler.

Winter skin glitch two: chapped, sore and red skin.

Sore skin is a winter weather by-product. "Strong wind or exposure to sudden temperature changes can all cause your skin to be really dry and irritable," says Origins' Lieve de Clerq. The secret to preventing sore winter skin is to keep it moisturised and protected from the elements. A face defender like Clinique Super-defense Age Defense SPF25 protects from all winter elements, plus the effects of stress. To ease uncomfortably red skin, look for skin creams with soothing, calming formulas designed to take the 'sting' out of irritation like Dr Weil Ultra Calming Mega Mushroom Face Mask, Dr Nick Lowe Redness Relief Correcting Cream or Dr Nick Lowe Redness Relief Correcting Cream or Clinique Redness Solutions Urgent Relief Cream.

Winter skin glitch three: Skin that's as grey as the forecast

If you're having a grey day, blame light reflection. "Winter light is less 'warm' (literally and from a colour-spectrum perspective) so you will see the result of that cold light being reflected off the surface of your skin and it probably won't have as much of a natural glow," says Marcia. "When skin is dehydrated light doesn't reflect off it as beautifully. What you see is the translucency through the skin and all the inner workings like veins and blotchiness," says Marcia. To snatch back your healthy colour, go for a glow-boosting product like Soap & Glory Glow Job, which provides a healthy bronze veil of wash-off colour or blend a small amount of Maybelline Dream Sun Glow Bronzing Booster Make-Up with your usual moisturiser.

And now the good news...

"In winter, you'll see less humidity-induced acne, oiliness, and blackheads/clogged pores," says Marcia. And failing that, there's always Christmas, cashmere knits and hot chocolate?
