Celebrating those who go the extra mile

Congratulations to 2014's Health Hero

Celebrating those who go the extra mile

Dr John Cormack, a GP from Greenwood Surgery in Essex, has won the Daily Mail Health Hero awards.

Boots were partners in the awards, run in association with ITV's This Morning, to celebrate those who go the extra mile to care for others.

His patient Ian Gillard nominated Dr Cormack for the support he has given him and his family, including driving 20 miles to see his two-year-old great-grandson when he was unwell.

He's also worked tirelessly by liaising with several departments in local services to get support for Ian's wife, while she had mental health problems.

Dr Cormack even opened his surgery one Saturday, especially to give Ian an injection. He also opens it on bank holidays to save patients driving 40 minutes to the nearest hospital. If any of his patients ends up in hospital, he visits them and talks to the other doctors caring for them. Dr Cormack also gives sick or hospitalised patients his mobile phone number to call him at any time and visits elderly patients to check they are well.

Dr Cormack regularly puts his own money into his underfunded practice and although he has retired, he still works a very long week.
