Macmillan and Boots in partnership

Working together to bring support and information to people affected by cancer.

Published 30/04/2010

People with cancer may worry about the future. They may find it hard to talk with family and friends about how they feel. Many people will need help and support to take positive steps to feel more in control. This is where the Boots and Macmillan partnership comes in.

Working together

The easiest part of dealing with cancer should be getting some help and support. By working together, Macmillan Cancer Support and Boots want to give the two million people in the UK currently living with cancer, and their family and friends, the information and support they need.

Macmillan and Boots aim to do this by bringing information about living with cancer to the UK's local high streets, regional communities, and online.

Boots customers can currently pick up a leaflet with general information about cancer from all its stores, and be signposted to Macmillan where they can find out more about the breadth of vital services provided by Macmillan, including practical, medical, financial and emotional support.

Boots colleagues are already committed to the cause and have embarked on some inspiring fundraising activities for Macmillan. This has included the company-wide Miles for Macmillan event, which has involved Boots taking up the enormous challenge of clocking up 290,000 miles by foot, bike or rowing boat to raise money for Macmillan. That's one mile for every person diagnosed with cancer in the UK each year.

Boots colleagues will also be getting involved in various volunteering opportunities - including campaigning on behalf of Macmillan and developing a scheme to directly help people affected by cancer through practical support projects.

Ciarán Devane, chief executive at Macmillan Cancer Support, explains: "The number of cases of cancer is increasing at a frightening rate. Members of the public need to be able to find out answers to general questions about cancer, have the confidence to speak to a health professional about their concerns or know how to help support friends and family - which is why we're delighted to be working with Boots to help enable us to meet this demand."
