Most people can self diagnose short-term stress easily. If you're stuck in a traffic jam or a water pipe bursts at home, then you'll probably recognise the common twinges of stress quickening your heart and making you feel more alert.

Although this type of stress is often relieved shortly after the situation is resolved, we may still feel our wellbeing is being affected by the stresses and strains of everyday life.

Whenever this happens, you may experience one or all of the common indicators of stress, which include:

  • feeling tired due to poor quality sleep
  • lethargy and low energy levels
  • a change in eating habits, typified either by overeating, a loss of appetite, or periods of both
  • mood swings

You may also experience physical symptoms, especially if you have an underlying condition that can be triggered by stress. These symptoms include:

  • digestive problems
  • skin irritations
  • headaches and migraines
  • hair loss
  • a debilitated immune system that may lead to an increased frequency of other illnesses like the common cold

If any of these symptoms are severe, then you may be suffering from clinical stress and should speak to your doctor about potential solutions.
