Rule number one has to be: keep your camera handy. Out of reach, yes, but if it's tucked away then by the time you've found it you'll probably have missed the moment. Children move quickly and are unpredictable in what they do, so ensure you don't miss a trick by keeping your camera in a bag or pocket when you're out and about.
Kids are notorious for becoming bored easily and I'm sure yours are no exception. Most children love the camera and are more than happy to pose, but only for as long as you can hold their interest. Be sure to act quick while you click. More importantly, make sure you have enough room on your memory card! You don't want to miss a moment because you've run out of space. Replacement cards are available at Boots.com.![]()
Getting a child to sit still can be mission impossible, so give in gracefully. Instead, switch your camera to a high shutter speed or sports/action mode. They can then run around happily and you'll get pictures that are sharper and more fun.
Consider the time of day your kids are likely to be at their best, as this will make things so much easier. Think about lighting and locations in advance, so that picture taking is as pain-free as possible.
When photographing small children it's best to get down to their level. This makes it easier for them to interact with you and gives a very flattering angle for portraits.
Young skin can handle even the closest of close up shots. In fact, it's often the case of the closer you get the more impact your photos will have. Really make the image impact more by printing your image as an enlargement at Bootsphoto.com.
Ask another adult to stand beside you and chat to the child you're photographing. This allows you to concentrate on taking the pictures and encourages your subject to look away from the camera, giving you a wider variety of shots.
Taking photos when your child is totally engrossed in something else, such as playing with their toys, makes them oblivious to your camera. This gives a wonderfully relaxed feel and is a great way of capturing their individual personality. A series of photos of your child at play makes fantastic, natural-looking wall art. Try enlarging your photo at Bootsphoto.com and display in stylish large frames at Boots.com. Alternatively, photo collages are a popular modern way to display multiple images on one large print. If the collage is for a child's room, you can even choose bright and colourful Disney and Warner Brothers characters to really make your photos stand out.
Talking of toys, if you know you're going to be taking a series of photos it's worth packing away the majority of their toys and clearing some space. Simple pictures without lots of distractions make for more powerful images.
Photographing your own family should always be fun. Have a laugh with the kids, let them see the pictures you've just taken, try fancy dress costumes or allow them to be photographed with their favourite doll or teddy bear: whatever it takes to keep them smiling!
Transform a photograph you really love into a stunning photo canvas print. Decorate your child's bedroom with an enlarged print of them with their siblings or favourite toy.
If your kids love to play, how about a princess or pirate gift set for their birthday? Upload your best snap and print personalised collages, posters, notebooks and stickers. They'll be able to see themselves with their favourite characters, from Bugs Bunny™ and Nemo™ to the Pirates of the Caribbean™.
Immortalise your baby (before the terrible twos kick in) in decorative etched glass cubes and hard-backed personalised photobooks. Never under-estimate the emotional pulling power of personalised gifts; grandparents and other family members will love these keepsakes.
Make mealtimes more entertaining by sitting down to dinner with a set of personalised decorative placemats. Let your little ones pick their favourite picture and turn them into fun dining room essentials.
